Chungcheongnam-Do offers a wide variety of experiences for a trip: coastal landscapes sit alongside historic sites and nature and cultural attractions inland. The province’s sights can accordingly be divided into coastal and inland areas. If you are looking for a hotel, this distinction can help you first choose the themes you want to shape your trip.

Coast, Beaches, and Migratory Birds

Taean Coastal National Park encompasses the Taean Peninsula and Anmyeondo. Its coastline is 198 kilometers long; the park includes 27 beaches and covers an area of 388.604 square kilometers. Along the ria coast, tidal flats, dunes, oddly shaped rocks, and numerous islands alternate. The park is Korea’s only coastal national park, where diverse coastal ecosystems coexist.

Sunsets are a defining feature of Kkotji Beach, where they meet the rocks Halmibawi and Harabibawi. At Daecheon Beach, visitors can enjoy skybikes and zip lines; it is also where the Boryeong Mud Festival takes place. Check the current festival dates and operating details before your trip if you plan to include these activities.

Another way to experience the coastal landscape is through Seosan Birdland. The site was developed to systematically protect and manage Seosan Cheonsuman as a globally renowned migratory bird habitat and to promote ecological tourism and environmental education. At the exhibition hall, specimens, videos, and audio recordings provide insights into almost 200 migratory bird species from Cheonsuman. A visit here focuses on habitats and birdlife rather than beach activities.

Baekje Sites and Buildings from Different Eras

In Buyeo-eup, the Gwanbuk-ri archaeological site and Busosanseong Fortress are part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Baekje Historic Areas. Both sites are therefore associated with Baekje’s cultural heritage. Gungnamji Pond is also steeped in history: the pond lies at the site of Baekje’s former second palace and is associated with the legend of Seodongyo. The Seodong Lotus Festival is held there every July; check the current festival dates before your trip.

Temples and fortifications from different periods offer further historical points of reference. The Daeungjeon Hall at Sudeoksa Temple was built in 1308 and is considered Korea’s oldest surviving wooden building. The walled city of Haemieupseong was built as a military fortress in the early Joseon period and is considered one of the best-preserved walled cities from that era. In Gongju, the Guksadang Hall at Magoksa Temple was built in 1796; today it serves as a shrine to local mountain spirits.

The Independence Hall in Cheonan collects, preserves, displays, examines, and researches materials on Korea’s history of overcoming national crises and its national development. The Hyeonchungsa Shrine in Asan includes an archery range and the Chungmugong Yi Sunsin Memorial Museum. These sites have different areas of focus: history and national development sit alongside a shrine and its associated facilities.

Activities and Regional Specialties

The Yedang Tourist Area includes a 402-meter-long suspension bridge, a musical fountain, a monorail, walking paths, and camping facilities. Agroland Taeshin Farm offers hands-on activities related to dairy farming, including milking cows and feeding calves and cows. The two offerings are quite different: various facilities and paths shape a visit to the Yedang Tourist Area, while Agroland Taeshin offers practical farm activities. Check current operating and participation requirements before visiting.

Regional food culture also offers a tangible insight into traditional production methods. Myeoncheon Dugyeonju is designated as Korea’s Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 86-2. The liquor is made and aged over a period of 100 days. This long duration is integral to its described production process, setting this cultural heritage apart from the province’s historic buildings and natural areas.
