Emerald-green rivers, limestone landscapes and islands with a shifting sandbar: Eastern Visayas offers different ways to plan a trip. Samar Island Natural Park covers 347,000 hectares and has a 123,000-hectare buffer zone. Alongside it are individual places where specific landscapes and activities take center stage. This lets you plan according to whether you are especially interested in nature parks, islands, river trips, or culinary and cultural experiences.

Nature among limestone, forest and river

In Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park in the municipality of Basey, limestone formations, dense forests, underground caves and emerald-green rivers shape the landscape. The interplay of rock, forest and water gives the park a different character from the region’s open coastal and sandbar landscapes. If you are comparing nature destinations, you will find a combination of caves, river scenery and dense vegetation here.

At Tinago Eco-Tourism Park, the focus is on peaceful walking paths, hiking trails, viewpoints and scenic river paths. Activities available there include hiking, birdwatching and picnicking. This makes the focus here especially on trails and viewpoints, while Sohoton is characterized above all by its limestone formations and underground caves.

Islands, sandbars and sweeping views

Sambawan Island consists of four islets. The larger one has a white beach and is connected to the smaller islets by a rocky bridge; these are accessible only at low tide. On the island, you can walk along the beach, swim in the clear sea and hike in the hills. If your visit is to include the smaller islets, the tidal conditions are important to keep in mind when planning.

Higatangan Island has a 200-meter-long sandbar at its southeastern tip. Monsoon currents regularly shift it east or west from its shoreline attachment point. You can reach the island from the Port of Naval in about 45 minutes by motorized outrigger boat. Use this travel time as a guide and check the current schedule before setting off.

Visitors can also walk along the sandy beach or sandbar on Kalanggaman Island. Lintaon Peak 16,000 Blossoms above Baybay City offers a different perspective on the landscape: from there, sweeping views extend over the city, the Camotes Sea and the surrounding highlands. Island beaches and elevated viewpoints therefore offer different impressions of the landscape.

River experiences and regional connections

The Ulot River Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride in the municipality of Paranas passes through landscapes of Samar Island Natural Park along the province’s longest river. Another perspective from the river is offered by the Samar Heritage River Cruise, which travels along the Mabaysay Golden River and is associated with Basey. The names identify different experiences: a ride called an Extreme Ride and a Heritage River Cruise.

The San Juanico Bridge connects Leyte and Samar. Regularly operating passenger buses connect Tacloban with Eastern Samar; their destinations include Borongan, Guiuan, Dolores and Oras. If you plan to use bus connections, check the current schedule, as operators and times may change.

Culinary traditions and festivals

Secret Kitchens of Samar makes time-honored family recipes, traditional cooking techniques and local family traditions accessible to visitors through immersive culinary experiences and curated food routes. The focus is not just on dishes, but also on how they are prepared and the family traditions associated with them. On Higatangan, weaving mats from the fibers of the local Romblon plant is part of the women’s livelihood tradition.

The Hudyaka Festival marks the anniversary of the founding of Biliran Province every year on May 11; dance and festivities bring the people of Biliran together. In March, the Karayapan Festival takes place in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It represents the connection between the town’s early residents and nature’s gifts: abundant marine life, fertile land and lush forests. It is also a festival of thanksgiving to the patron saint, the Blessed Virgin Mary. If you want to include a festival in your trip, check the exact dates and program locally.

In Burauen, the Leyte Inner Healing Trail is an experience focused on healing, wellness and relaxation. The range of themes therefore extends from nature and river landscapes to culinary traditions, festivals and wellness.
