Taal offers several distinct themes for a culture-focused trip: the Basilica of St. Martin de Tours, the Shrine of Caysasay, and the EL PASUBAT Festival, celebrated annually in April. The buildings foreground architecture and history, while the festival has a recurring place in the annual calendar. So if you are still deciding when to travel, you can consider whether architectural history or the festival date should be your focus.

Church Architecture and Building History

The Basilica of St. Martin de Tours stands on a hill in the center of Taal. Its elevated position and location in the town center describe two aspects of the townscape: the basilica is on a hill and at the same time in the center of town. This gives travelers interested in church architecture a concrete sense of its location. Its building history offers another perspective: the structure visible today was built in 1856 under Fr. Marcos Anton; architect Luciano Oliver supervised the design and construction. The year refers to the construction of the structure visible today. Its location and building history can therefore be considered as distinct aspects: one situates the basilica within Taal, while the other concerns its visible form.

The Shrine of Caysasay: History and Buildings

On June 20, 2024, the National Museum of the Philippines handed the newly restored Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay over to the Archdiocese of Lipa and the people of Taal, Batangas.

A 120-step staircase made of Chinese granite pieces connects the Shrine of Caysasay to Taal Cathedral. Its architectural features differ from those of the basilica: the number of steps, the material, and the connection between the two religious landmarks characterize the staircase. This makes clear the difference between a description of a place in terms of its location and building history and a structure whose form and connection are central aspects.

Balon de Santa Lucia is an ornate arch and fountain structure within the Nuestra Señora de Caysasay Church-Convent complex in Taal, Batangas. Unlike the staircase, it is a structure within a complex, whereas the staircase connects two named religious sites. Those interested in architecture can thus explore different forms: a physical connection and an ornamentally designed structure.

EL PASUBAT and When to Travel

The EL PASUBAT Festival is celebrated annually in April and brings together Taal’s distinctive products. This gives it a different travel appeal from the historic buildings: the month is part of the festival’s recurring rhythm, while the basilica and the buildings around Caysasay mainly offer architectural and historical points of interest. This distinction can help you choose your travel dates.
