Temerloh: Rivers, Markets and Patin Cuisine
Accommodation in Temerloh
Temerloh lies on the banks of the Pahang River, at the confluence of the Pahang River and the Semantan River. When looking for a hotel in Temerloh, it’s worth deciding in advance which part of the city matters most for your trip: the market, river activities, local Patin cuisine or the old town. The following places and dates provide practical guidance.
Market Days in Temerloh
Every Sunday, Pekan Sehari stretches for one kilometre along the Pahang River and is run by the Temerloh Municipal Council. The market has been known in Lurah Semantan for several decades. Around 607 vendors offer vegetables, fruit, meals, pastries, fish, chicken, meat and other goods; vendor numbers and the selection may change. If you plan to visit the market, bear in mind that it takes place on Sunday and check that it is running before you travel.
Another event is the boot sale, held every Saturday evening in Temerloh. Anyone can take part as a vendor or buyer. The two markets therefore take place on different days of the weekend. If either is important to your trip, confirm that it is going ahead in advance.
Riverside Spots and City Park
Boat rides on the Pahang River are offered at Esplanade Park; visitors can also relax along the river. The Semantan River is a starting point for boat trips, leisure activities and river cruises. Check local availability in advance for a specific trip.
Kubang Gajah Park is in the centre of Temerloh, near Town’s Park. This means that, alongside the riverside spots, there is also a park in the city centre. These places offer different options if you want to include river activities and a centrally located park in your travel plans.
Patin Cuisine and a Local Nickname
Temerloh is known as “Bandar Ikan Patin” (“City of the Patin Catfish”) because of the abundance of Patin catfish. Patin tempoyak is considered a typical dish of the city: a freshwater fish dish with durian sauce. Patin Square also has a restaurant offering a selection of Patin fish dishes. A local nickname, a typical dish and a specific restaurant offering provide different starting points for planning where to eat.
Old Town and Historic Buildings
Temerloh’s old town, formerly called Kuala Semantan, features colonial buildings and streets lined with two-storey shophouses. This combination of historic buildings and shopping streets adds another dimension to the cityscape alongside the rivers and markets. The former name Kuala Semantan also preserves the old town’s historical connection to its earlier name.
Activities in the Surrounding Area
In the surrounding area, Gunung Senyum is associated with mountain climbing, jungle hikes, cave exploration and camping. If you plan these activities, check current access conditions in advance.
Kuala Gandah Elephant Centre is also in the surrounding area. Visitors can bathe elephants there from 2 p.m. As schedules and availability may change, check both directly with the Centre before visiting.
