Explore Qaraghandy through a range of themes: archaeological and natural history collections, the history of coal mining, memorial sites, and activities by the lake and in parks. When planning a stay, you can choose places based on these different interests—from historic exhibits to outdoor activities.

Museums: From Early Eras to Nature

Buketov University History Museum offers free guided tours in Kazakh, Russian or English. The exhibits at the Saryarka Archaeology and Ethnography Museum span the period from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Life-size petroglyphs, a reconstruction of a Bronze Age tomb, ancient Turkic statues and a traditional yurt complement this timeline. Here, different forms of historical interpretation sit alongside a broad sequence of eras.

Buketov University Nature Museum presents animal and plant species from Kazakhstan, Southeast Asia, South America and Australia. The exhibition combines two perspectives: it includes both plants and animals and covers several regions. Its focus differs from that of the Saryarka Museum, which centers on historical eras, finds and reconstructions.

Mining History and Memorial Sites

Karagandy Mine Museum is an underground training mine about 15 meters below ground. It recreates working conditions and showcases underground workings, mining equipment, conveyor belts, mine carts and support systems. It also explains the history of the Karaganda Coal Basin and mining. Unlike the archaeological exhibition, its focus is on the working world and technology of mining, connecting these subjects with the history of the coal basin.

Memorial Museum of Academician E.A. Buketov recreates his study. On display are personal belongings, documents, manuscripts, scientific works, photographs, awards and furnishings. The reconstructed room and the personal and scientific items on display give the museum a different focus from the collections on regional archaeology and ethnography.

Shakhtyorskaya Slava Memorial Complex opened in 1974 and commemorates the work of miners in the Karaganda Coal Basin. Anet Baba Mosque is considered one of Kazakhstan’s largest mosques and an important spiritual center for the Karaganda Region. Together with the museums, these places offer different perspectives on history, remembrance and religious life.

Animals, the Lake and Outdoor Activities

Karagandy State Zoological Park was founded between 1936 and 1938. Its collection includes more than 200 animal species and over 1,000 individual animals, including large mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and aquarium animals. These figures convey two different aspects: the number of species describes the collection’s diversity, while the number of individual animals shows its size. Unlike Buketov University Nature Museum, which presents animal and plant species from several regions, the zoo focuses on a zoological collection featuring various animal groups.

Central Beach is a lakeside beach in Central Park of Culture and Recreation. In summer, you can swim or sunbathe there. The park’s boat station rents boats and pedal boats for outings on the lake; there are also cycling paths with bicycle rentals for children and adults. This offers a range of activities: spending time at the beach, heading out on the water or cycling along the designated paths.

Alash Square has walking and cycling paths, sports grounds, national art objects and anamorphic installations. These installations are dedicated to regional natural and tourist attractions, including Bekatau-Ata, Shaitankol, Priozersk and Botakaru. The GGG Sports Complex offers boxing, basketball, volleyball, swimming, wrestling and weightlifting, among other activities. In this way, the square’s paths and public art complement the complex’s sports activities with more ways to discover Qaraghandy.
