Bukhar-Zhyrau District combines landscape and cultural connections that can be clearly distinguished through named natural areas, bodies of water and historical sites. Start planning by choosing your destination before comparing individual hotel offers.

Landscape and bodies of water

Belagash Nature Reserve is located in Bukhar-Zhyrau District. Its bodies of water include Lake Botakara, the Intumak Reservoir and the Nura River. Lake Botakara covers 581 hectares, while the Intumak Reservoir covers 4,100 hectares; the reservoir is therefore around seven times the area of the lake. This comparison highlights a clear difference in size between the two bodies of standing water. The Nura is one of the district’s major rivers and is listed as 110 km long. While the figures for the lake and reservoir describe their water surface area, the figure for the Nura refers to the river’s length. This makes it possible to distinguish different landscape features, rather than treating measurements for different types of bodies of water as equivalent. In the wider destination of Qaraghandy, the ascent from the Torkora tract to the summit of Aksoran is about 3.4 km long, with an elevation gain of approximately 560–600 m.

Archaeological sites and mausoleums

The district has more than 60 archaeological sites from the Stone and Bronze Ages. These two periods provide a broad historical context. Individual mausoleums, meanwhile, can be distinguished by their specific location references, which helps with orientation.

The Bukhar-Zhyrau Mausoleum was built in 1993 at his burial site; it lies about 25 km north of the village of Shalkar, at the foot of Mount Dalba. The Alshynbay Mausoleum is northwest of the village of Umutker, while the Aimagambet Qazhy Mausoleum is in the village of Akzhar. The local references differ: an approximate distance from Shalkar with a mountain as a landmark, a direction from Umutker, and a location within the village of Akzhar. This comparison helps you distinguish the three monuments when planning your trip, rather than viewing them simply as a group.

Cultural sites in Botakara

In the district center of Botakara, the local history museum has 3,788 exhibits. An Orthodox church building dating from 1909 is also located there. The two cultural references offer different points of focus: the museum can be understood through the size of its collection, while the church building is identified by its denomination and year of construction. Together with the archaeological sites and the Bukhar-Zhyrau Mausoleum, built in 1993, these sites span a period from the Stone and Bronze Ages to specific dates for buildings. This allows you to distinguish between a broad archaeological theme and individual cultural sites with specific dates.
