Balkhash lies on the western, freshwater side of Lake Balkhash and is considered an important tourist gateway to the lake. You can get there by road, intercity bus and train. Check the current schedule for your mode of transport before departure. In the city, seasonal opportunities by the water combine with themes from the city’s history and the offerings of a central market.

Beaches and time by the water

Several beach areas have been designated in Bertyss Bay. The beach at the AquaCo recreation area is designated for mass recreation on Lake Balkhash. The Medical College’s public beach is also designated for public recreation; another public beach is located on the shore of Bertyss Bay. Before visiting, check current access and available facilities.

Swimming is possible at the city beaches in summer. The period from June to August is considered the best time around Lake Balkhash for beach recreation, swimming and water activities. If swimming is important to you, plan around this period and check water conditions and beach access locally.

Sightseeing boats depart for Lake Balkhash from a pier on the promenade next to the amusement park. Operations and schedules may change; check locally if a tour is part of your plans.

Ordinary areas along the shore of Lake Balkhash are considered accessible year-round. Check local conditions in advance for specific locations.

City history and architecture

The City History and Local Lore Museum offers themed excursions for groups, individuals and VIPs. The Palace of Metallurgists was built between 1948 and 1952 to a design by architect L. Melegi. The museum and the building offer two specific starting points for exploring the city’s history: themed excursions on the one hand and a clearly dated architectural history on the other.

Market and local specialties

At the central city market, you can find Korean carrot salad and other salads; watermelons and melons are also available in summer. Offerings are seasonal and may change. Local businesses and vendors offer Balkhash fish, such as zander, asp and carp, fresh, dried or smoked. The fish species and preparations available depend on the season and the vendor.
