Tselinograd District: ALZHIR, Steppe and Culture

The ALZHIR Memorial Museum Complex is located in Akmol, on the site of the former camp. In the rural district of Kabanbay Batyr stands a red-brick mausoleum with a tent-shaped dome. The steppe, continental climate, and local flora and fauna also characterize Tselinograd District.

ALZHIR: Memorial History and Exhibitions

The ALZHIR Memorial Museum Complex is located in the village of Akmol, on the site of the former Akmola Camp for the Wives of Traitors to the Motherland. The camp was established in 1938; more than 18,000 women from the Soviet republics passed through it. The memorial complex was officially opened on May 31, 2007.

The memorial grounds include the Bell of Sorrow, the “Road” installation, and reconstructed basement prison cells with themed exhibitions. The exhibition halls contain historical documents, photographs, personal belongings, and artifacts relating to the daily lives of the imprisoned women. Archival videos, dioramas, reconstructions, and artistic installations interpret the totalitarian era.

The museum also conducts archival research and educational activities, including conferences, seminars, documentary screenings, and themed events. The ALASH–ALZHIR excursion is listed as lasting 45 minutes, with no age restriction. Program details may change; check them before your visit.

Mausoleum and Cultural Life

The Kabanbay Batyr Mausoleum is a historical and cultural site in the rural district of Kabanbay Batyr, Tselinograd District. It is built of red brick and has a tent-shaped dome. Its architectural design is compared to the Tower of Qabus.

The Center of Friendship opened in the village of Kabanbay Batyr in 2017. It hosts round tables, lectures, meetings, and charity events involving representatives of various ethnic communities. Specific programs may vary.

Steppe, Climate and Wildlife

Tselinograd District is predominantly flat and has a dry, strongly continental climate; seasonal conditions vary. Its vegetation includes steppe grasses and herbs, as well as birch, aspen, pine, poplar, elm, and willow trees. The district’s natural landscapes support diverse flora and fauna.

Birdlife includes rooks, magpies, larks, wagtails, and cuckoos, as well as Montagu’s and pallid harriers, mallards, teals, and reed buntings. Mammals include marmots, small ground squirrels, jerboas, and steppe rodents. Wolves, foxes, muskrats, and badgers are considered rare. Along with its historical sites, the district therefore offers plenty of interest for travelers keen to explore the landscape and wildlife.

Traditional Cuisine

Beshbarmak and the drinks kumis, shubat, and kymyran are part of the district’s culinary traditions. Kazakh cuisine also includes the preserved horse-meat specialties kazy, shuzhuk, zhal, zhaya, and karta. Baursaks are another traditional baked specialty of the district.

BalQaragai and Travel Planning

In May 2026, a 55-hectare eco-park was reported to be under development at BalQaragai. Plans include areas for family recreation and nature watching, sports facilities, and ecotourism routes. Existing attractions include an ethno-village, a water park, and sports facilities; offerings may change during development. Check the completion status and access conditions before your trip.

A transport notice dated November 8, 2022, lists suburban routes 300, 305, and 312 to Akmol from the Astana side via the P-2 Astana–Korgalzhyn road. Before traveling, check whether the route numbers and schedules are still current.
