Daito: Temples, History and Waterside Landscapes
Accommodation in Daito
Daito brings together religious sites, history and a waterside landscape. When planning your trip, you can focus on different interests: the temple complex around Nozaki Kannon, history at Mount Iimori, or the former use of waterways in the Goryo district. If you are looking for a hotel in Daito, it helps to decide which of these interests to prioritize during your stay.
Nozaki Kannon and Mount Iimori
From JR Nozaki Station, Nozaki Approach Shopping Street leads about a ten-minute walk east to Nozaki Kannon. The temple is at the foot of Mount Iimori. The walking time is an estimate; as routes can change, check the way before your visit.
Right next to Nozaki Kannon is Nozaki Mairi Park, a Japanese-style park. As Daito’s tourist information center, it has brochures about the Iimori Castle ruins, Miyoshi Nagayoshi, the Mount Iimori hiking trail and the stone walls. During Nozaki Mairi, the curtain in front of the main hall is opened. Visitors can then worship directly before the eleven-faced Kannon statue, which is normally kept there. This opportunity is available during the festival period.
Trails and historical perspectives
The Mount Iimori hiking trail connects Nozaki Kannon with Shijonawate Shrine. Daito developed the section from Nozaki Kannon to the Outdoor Activity Center as “Daitō no Mori” and installed signs at several points. If you plan to take the trail, check the conditions on site.
At the Iimori Castle ruins, the app “Yomigaeru Iimori-jō – the Last Seat of ‘Tenka-jin’ Miyoshi Nagayoshi” lets you compare the present-day landscape with its historical appearance. The app also supports exploring the site on foot. Check whether the app is available before your trip.
Museum and temple culture
At the Daito Historical Folk Museum, visitors can view exhibits, find cultural properties and historic walking routes, and watch videos about them. There are also hands-on activities: you can try on a replica of the armor excavated from Doyama Kofun and imprint patterns on clay vessels. The museum visit therefore focuses not only on looking, but also on practical activities.
At the unusual temple grounds of Ryuganji, figures from Japanese folk tales greet visitors. There is also a large statue of Buddha, which is especially interesting for children. The temple sites in Daito thus offer a variety of cultural highlights.
Waterways and landscape in the Goryo district
Goryo Seseragi Waterway is in the Goryo district and preserves the history of agricultural transport and travel before the age of the automobile. Parts of a former settlement landscape crisscrossed by waterways also remain in the district. Together with the old buildings, they form a waterside landscape, with cherry blossoms in spring.
A municipal description updated in 2020 lists trips on a traditional rice boat at Goryo Seseragi Waterway every year from April to September: on the first and third Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., for 100 yen. Check before your trip whether a boat ride is offered on the day of your visit. The timing to consider for your trip follows a different schedule from the spring cherry blossoms: the boat rides described are limited to specific Sundays during the season.
