Iwate District: Walking Trails, Outdoor Art, and Seasonal Blooms

When choosing a hotel in Iwate District, you can focus on the experiences you want to shape your stay: walking trails, outdoor art and flowering plants, or activities in 葛巻町. The activities also differ in how they need to be planned: some are tied to a particular season, while others require a reservation.

Walking Trails and Trail Conditions

The resort walking program in 岩手町 includes two routes. The long route is about 3 km, and the short route is about 1.6 km. This shorter route runs entirely within the grounds of 石神の丘美術館; the longer route is the longer of the two listed routes. Course descriptions and the possibility of participating may change. If you plan to take one of the walking routes, check the participation requirements.

A different situation applies to the 丹藤川遊歩道散策. A notice last updated on October 1, 2020, states that, following disaster damage, only part of the trail was passable: from the weir to 立石, about 3 km away. Check current trail conditions before setting out, rather than treating the notice from that time as confirmation of the trail’s current state.

Outdoor Art and Blooming Season

石神の丘美術館 opened in July 1993 as the first outdoor sculpture museum in Iwate Prefecture. Its outdoor area includes 花とアートの森, a walking area on the slope of 石神山 in 岩手町, landscaped with sculptures and plants. This makes it possible to combine an art visit with time outdoors. At 花とアートの森, you can experience more than 100 kinds of flowering plants.

The calendar brings a seasonal highlight for the flowers: lavender is at its best from late June to early July, although the timing may vary from year to year. If you are visiting especially for the flowers, take this window into account when planning. The sculptures and views of the plants are part of the same outdoor area, while the seasonal bloom is an additional timing consideration.

Activities in 葛巻町

葛巻町 offers several cycling options. Bicycle stations are located in various places across the town, and there are also electric-assist e-bike rentals and e-bike experience events. Rental locations and availability may change. If an e-bike is important to your plans, check the latest information before deciding on your activities.

At くずまきワイン, you can tour the tank room, bottling facility, and wine cellar with explanations from staff. Tours are available year-round by prior reservation. A reservation is therefore part of planning this activity, not something to leave until you arrive.

At くずまき高原牧場, you can cultivate shiitake mushrooms, from inoculating logs felled in the mountains through to harvesting. This bookable program requires advance reservations. Experiences in 葛巻町 therefore differ not only in subject: for the winery tour and mushroom program, you should plan on making a reservation, while e-bike rental locations and availability may change.
