In Iwate Prefecture, ancient temple complexes meet the Pacific coast and alpine landscapes. The region offers everything from gilded interiors and preserved gardens to gorges, caves and winter activities. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you are most interested in cultural sites, coastal experiences or the mountains.

Getting There and Cultural Heritage

The JR Tōhoku Shinkansen runs daily from Tokyo, Sendai and Hakodate to Iwate. Check the timetables before your trip to plan your journey.

In Hiraizumi, in the south of the prefecture, temples and gardens shape the cultural landscape. Chūson-ji Temple was built in the 11th and 12th centuries by the Northern Fujiwara clan. In Konjikidō, the interior walls, ceilings and floors are completely lacquered and gilded. Motsu-ji offers a different emphasis: its elegant Pure Land gardens and pond have been preserved, although the original temples and pagodas burned down many years ago. Together, these sites offer two distinct impressions of what remains of a historic temple complex.

A regional tea tradition is also associated with Motsu-ji. Ennen-cha can only be enjoyed there and has been recognized as an intangible folk cultural property. The Fujiwara Autumn Festival is one of two autumn festivals held at Chūson-ji. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the current festival dates.

The Sanriku Coast and Experiences on the Water

Iwate faces the Pacific Ocean along the Sanriku Coast, which is part of Sanriku Fukkō National Park. The landscape offers different perspectives on the sea: in Geibikei Gorge, you can take in the surroundings from a flat-bottomed boat reminiscent of a Venetian boat. At Kitayamazaki, the 200-meter-high Unosu Cliffs rise from the sea. Several trails and boat tours offer views of the cliffs. When planning, you can choose between views from land and a tour on the water.

At Jodogahama Beach, a sheltered bay has calm waters suitable for swimming. The coast thus combines striking rock formations with a beach specifically suited to swimming. Those interested in nature by the sea will find both this bay and the dramatic cliff scenery of Kitayamazaki in Iwate.

Mountains, Caves and Winter in Hachimantai

Mount Iwate is the highest peak in the prefecture and is also known as Nanbu Fuji. It can be climbed from the Yakehashiri or Kamibo trailheads in the city of Hachimantai. A large population of the alpine plant Dicentra also grows along the Yakehashiri climbing trail. In the alpine area of Hachimantai, pristine forests, snow-covered mountains and wetlands full of wildflowers come together.

In winter, activities in Hachimantai include skiing and snowboarding. Guided snowshoe hikes through remote mountain and forest areas are also available. These activities offer different experiences: skiing and snowboarding focus on winter sports, while a guided snowshoe hike takes you through mountain and forest landscapes.

Another natural attraction is Ryūsendō Cave, with its three crystal-clear underground lakes. The cave is also home to many different species of bats. Its lakes and wildlife make it a different kind of nature experience from Hachimantai’s open mountain landscapes or the Pacific coastal views.

Art, Crafts and Regional Cuisine

The Iwate Prefectural Museum of Art displays works by local artists, including Tetsugoro Mantetsu, Shunsuke Matsumoto and Yasutake Funakoshi. Special exhibitions explore a range of national and international themes. Lectures, workshops and concerts round out the program. In Morioka, Morioka Handi-Works Square offers hands-on workshops where you can make local crafts.

The food culture offers another distinctive experience: Wanko soba is served as a culinary challenge. A server repeatedly refills small bowls until you stop. This makes the meal an interactive experience with a distinctive and unusual way of serving.

When looking for a hotel in Iwate Prefecture, you can decide on your focus in advance: temples and art, the Pacific coast or alpine nature with winter activities. This way, you can tailor your search to the experiences that interest you most on your trip.
