Yurihonjō: Nature, Cultural Heritage and Local Experiences
Accommodation in Yurihonjō
When looking for hotels in Yurihonjō, you can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most: mountain scenery and wetlands, cultural heritage, woodcraft, or local cuisine. The destinations and activities bring these interests to life.
Mount Chōkai and the Landscape
鳥海山 (Mount Chōkai) is one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains. It is known for its beech forests, alpine plants, and rare wetlands and their flora and fauna. About 250,000 hikers and tourists visit it each year. The mountain is associated with a rich natural environment, which can also be seen in individual wetlands and their plant life.
The historic site of 鳥海山 includes two parts within the city of Yurihonjō: the grounds of 森子大物忌神社, with the 登拝道 at 滝沢口, and the grounds of 木境大物忌神社, with the 道者道. On the grounds of 森子大物忌神社, about 300 steep stone steps lead from the first torii gate up to the shrine. The number and steep incline of the steps are useful details for anyone planning to visit this shrine.
Among the plants that grow in 桑ノ木台湿原 are ミズバショウ and ワタスゲ, as well as many other northern plants. Rare species listed in the Red Lists of Japan’s Ministry of the Environment or Akita Prefecture are also found there. Nearby is 竜ケ原湿原, close to 祓川ヒュッテ. A boardwalk leads through the wetland to a pond fed by a cold spring; numerous alpine plants, including rare species, can be seen in the area.
Cultural Heritage and Woodcraft
鳥海山 木のおもちゃ館 preserves the former school building of 旧鮎川小学校 in its original form. The building is registered as a national tangible cultural property. Founded in July 2018, the museum has toys and large play structures made from locally produced wood. It is designed as a place for wood-based learning and intergenerational exchange. The building, collection, and concept each offer a different aspect of the visit.
In the ぜんまい織り体験, the fuzz of the royal fern is woven into fabric made from silk and wool yarn. Coasters are an example of a possible finished item. Reservations are required at least one week in advance, so be sure to allow for this when planning your trip.
Outdoor Activities
法体園地キャンプ場 offers camping with a view of the waterfall, as well as cooking facilities and toilets. You can also play in the river there. The campground is open from early May through the end of October and is free of charge. Check its operating status before your trip. Above 法体の滝, 玉田渓谷 is described as a trekking course with many points of interest, including natural potholes. The campground and trekking course offer different ways to experience the area, without requiring you to take part in the same activity.
Local Cuisine and Rail Travel
発酵小路 田屋 is the direct-sales shop of the sake brewery 齋彌酒造店, known for 雪の茅舎. In a traditional house converted into a café and shop, it offers 雪の茅舎, amazake, 奈良漬 made with sake lees, and ice cream and cakes made with sake lees. As offerings may change, it is a good idea to check current opening information and selections before visiting.
Another culinary experience is making きりたんぽづくり at ハーブワールドAKITA. Coarsely crushed Akita rice is shaped around a skewer made from Akita cedar and browned. It is then used to make きりたんぽ鍋 with wild greens, vegetables, and chicken. The description shows the process from rice to finished dish.
For getting around the region, the 由利高原鉄道 鳥海山ろく線 connects 羽後本荘駅 (Ugo-Honjō) with 矢島駅 (Yashima). The line is 23.0 kilometers long and has twelve stations. It was formerly operated as the 国鉄矢島線. These route details and historical references help put the railway line in context; they do not include specific travel times.
