The Ōyu Stone Circles are one of two sites in Akita Prefecture that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jōmon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan. The prefecture lies on the Sea of Japan coast in the Tōhoku region. From this archaeological heritage to hot springs and hiking trails through beech forests, these are some of the experiences that can shape a trip through Akita.

Archaeological Sites, Edo-period Architecture and Craftsmanship

The Hotta-no-saku Ruins are the remains of an administrative complex dating to the early Heian period. Its enclosure is about 3.6 kilometers long, and the southern outer gate has been reconstructed to a height of 9.7 meters. These two measurements convey different dimensions: one describes the perimeter of the complex, while the other gives the height of a single reconstructed structure.

In Kakunodate, authentic Edo-period architecture is preserved in two areas with samurai and merchant districts. The Denshokan Museum showcases regional craftsmanship and offers demonstrations of kabazaiku, an art in which objects are covered with cherry tree bark. Check before your trip to see whether demonstrations are available. Kakunodate is also known for its weeping cherry trees, which bloom in spring.

Cultural Traditions and Seasonal Events

Oga no Namahage was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2018. Another cultural event is the Akita Kantō Festival, held every year in early August. It is a prayer for a good harvest of wheat, rice, beans, foxtail millet and proso millet. Check the festival’s exact program for the year before your trip.

The weeping cherry blossoms in Kakunodate in spring and the Kantō Festival held in early August offer different seasonal options for choosing when to visit. You can plan your trip around whether spring blossoms or an annual festival date is more important to you.

Hot Springs and Beech Forest Trails

Nyuto Onsenkyo is in the mountains north of Semboku in Akita Prefecture and comprises seven hot springs. Each has its own source and distinctive mineral characteristics; the area’s history stretches back more than 350 years. The seven springs and their different properties give the area its distinctive character. Individual facilities and visitor arrangements may change, so check the relevant details before planning a visit.

Shirakami Sanchi spans Akita and Aomori prefectures. Hiking trails pass through East Asia’s largest primeval beech forest. Nature and hiking are the focus here, while Nyuto Onsenkyo, with its hot springs, offers a different experience. Trail conditions and access procedures may change, so check them before hiking.

Planning Your Arrival and Hotel Location

Akita can be reached by the JR Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo, Sendai and Morioka. From other parts of Japan, you can also travel by car, regional trains or plane. Check schedules and operators before your trip.

When looking for a hotel, choose a location based on the experiences that matter to you: Kakunodate’s Edo-period architecture and craftsmanship, the hot springs of Nyuto Onsenkyo or the hiking trails in Shirakami Sanchi. First consider which places you want to shape your stay, then include the journey to them in your plans. This lets you compare hotel locations in the context of your personal itinerary without assuming a particular route or travel time.
