Watch the sunrise and sunset from the summit of Tagore Hill. The site is also associated with a sequence of historical uses: before Tagore Hill became a meeting place, it served as an ashram for Jyotindra Nath, Rabindranath Tagore’s elder brother; before that, it served as a rest house. Tagore Hill can be reached from all parts of the city by rickshaw, taxi and auto-rickshaw.

Hills, temples and views

Another hilltop site has a religious focus: Pahari Mandir is a Shiva temple on a hill in the centre of Ranchi. Reaching the summit requires climbing 468 steps. The sites therefore have different points of emphasis: Tagore Hill is known for its views and historical sequence, while Pahari Mandir combines a temple with a climb up steps.

Gardens and parks with distinct themes

Rock Garden was created from the rocks of Gonda Hill and features various sculptures and waterfalls. Kanke Dam Lake lies near Ranchi’s Rock Garden. Nakshatra Van offers a different thematic perspective: the themed garden is based on the interrelationship between astronomy, astrophysics and botany; its grounds include a children’s area. Ranchi Lake lies at the foot of Ranchi Hill and offers boating.

Sido Kanhu Park has marked paths for walking and jogging, as well as a children’s area. Murals there depict life in a traditional tribal village. The paths, play area and paintings each give the park its own character.

Museums, science and culture

The State Museum in Hotwar, Ranchi, showcases Jharkhand’s cultural heritage across several galleries, including anthropological aspects and the traditional lives of tribal communities. The Tribal Museum is part of the Dr Ram Dayal Munda Tribal Welfare Research Institute in Tagore Hill, Morabadi, Ranchi. It features dioramas depicting the traditional ways of life of Jharkhand’s 32 ethnic tribes.

The Ranchi Science Centre and Varahamihir Taramandal invite visitors to explore exhibitions and experiences about science and its everyday applications. Topics also include Jharkhand’s resources, cell organelles, climate change and the journey of light through space.

Religious festivals also form part of the city’s cultural character. The annual Rath Yatra takes place at Jagannath Mandir. It draws devotees from across the country and reflects Ranchi’s cultural diversity. Sarhul, the flower festival, marks the beginning of spring and is celebrated in Ranchi’s tribal communities with traditional dances, music and rituals.

Waterfalls and planning your stay

In the nearby area, the Subarnarekha River plunges 320 feet at Hundru Falls. Dassam Falls is 34 kilometres from Ranchi, on Ranchi-Tata Road near the village of Taimara. There, the Kanchi River falls over rugged terrain; the drop is approximately 44 metres. Ranchi’s forests and hilly landscapes offer trekking opportunities, with popular trails leading to Hundru Falls and Jonha Falls.

Ranchi can be reached by air, road and rail. Birsa Munda Airport is about 7 km from the city centre and offers regular flights to destinations including Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. You can tailor your search to the mix of city and nature you’re looking for.
