At Salkhan Fossils Park, the fossils are estimated to date back nearly 1,400 million years. Sonbhadra therefore offers starting points for trips to cave paintings and temples, as well as for nature and wildlife observation. The sights give your plans different points of focus; when searching for a hotel, it may help to first consider which topics interest you most.

Fossils, Rock Paintings and River Landscapes

Salkhan Fossils Park, officially called Sonbhadra Fossils Park, is located near the village of Salkhan on State Highway SH5A. It covers about 25 hectares in the Kaimur hills. Fossils found there include algae and stromatolites. The estimated age makes the park a special destination for anyone interested in early traces of life; the park’s area and its location in the hills also provide a clear geographic reference point.

Mukhafall lies on the banks of the Belan River in Ghorawal tehsil, about 40 kilometres west of the district headquarters. There, the river plunges from a height of approximately 100 feet. Mukhafall’s distinctive landscape is also shaped by numerous rock paintings. The river, waterfall and paintings represent different aspects of the place: a striking natural feature and a cultural heritage.

The Rihand Dam is also part of the district’s waterscape. It is located in Pipri, in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh; its reservoir lies on the border between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. This location distinguishes the dam from the river and waterfall sites, which also feature in the region’s visitor attractions.

Wildlife Observation and Cave Paintings

The headquarters of Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary is in Churk, Sonbhadra. Waterholes and observation towers at elevated viewpoints in Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary allow tourists to watch birds and animals in their natural habitat. Those interested in wildlife observation will find a different focus here from the fossils and rock paintings.

The Lakhania Caves are located in the Kaimur hills of Sonbhadra. The district is known for several cave-painting sites in the Vindhya region; the historic paintings in the Lakhania Caves are about 4,000 years old. For a trip focused on historic visual art, these caves provide a specific point of interest.

Panch Mukhi Mahadev is situated on a hill in Churk, three kilometres from the district headquarters. The site includes sixteen historic caves with paintings and carvings that attract tourists and pilgrims. The contents of the caves bring together pictorial and carved forms of heritage. Renukoot is also home to a large Sun Temple at the entrance to Renukeshwar Mahadev Mandir.

Temples and Festival Seasons

Shivdwar lies about 40 kilometres northwest of the district headquarters and ten kilometres from Ghorawal. It is home to a three-foot-high black stone image of Shiva and Parvati. Shivratri is the most important festival in Shivdwar and draws a large crowd. If you are interested in religious traditions, you can take this festival into account when planning your dates.

Kund Vasini Dham, on the western bank of the Son River, 35 kilometres west-southwest of the district headquarters, offers another architectural feature. The temple is built in the Khajuraho style and constructed entirely without cement. Details about its style and construction make the site particularly interesting for travellers who pay attention to temple architecture.

An Urs festival is held every year in April in Vijaygarh, with people from different religions and faith communities taking part. A large festival is held at Jwalamukhi Shaktipeeth every Navaratri, attracting very large crowds. If one of these festivals is part of your travel plans, check the exact dates in advance.
