A reclining Buddha statue carved from a single block of sandstone, temples drawing on different architectural traditions, and monuments arranged in several groups define Kushinagar. If you are interested in Buddhist cultural history, you will find archaeological evidence, shrines, stupas and a museum here. Each site has a different focus: archaeological finds, religious images and temple architecture give your exploration of the destination a clear thematic framework.

Monuments and Archaeological Evidence

The monuments of Kushinagar are arranged in three groups: the main site, with the main stupa and Nirvana Temple; the Matha Kuar shrine; and the Rambhar cremation stupa. The Mahanirvana Main Stupa is 19.81 metres high. At 15 metres, the Ramabhar Stupa is shorter; the difference in height is 4.81 metres.

Excavations led by A.C.L. Carlleyle in 1876–1877 uncovered the remains of the Mahanirvana Main Stupa. The reclining Buddha statue recovered at the Mahanirvana site is 6.1 metres long and is a monolithic sculpture carved from a single block of sandstone.

The existing Matha Kunwar shrine was built in 1927 AD. The Buddha statue enshrined there is 3.05 metres high. The Ramabhar Stupa marks the place where the Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana, or final enlightenment. Kushinagar is therefore home to both different forms of monuments and a variety of religious and historical landmarks.

Temples and Architectural Influences

The Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple is a joint project of the AIK World Buddhist Culture Association Japan and the Sri Lanka Buddhist Centre. Its main shrine is a domed brick structure on the first floor, accessible by a staircase. The building’s design, the shrine’s location within it and the two project partners each give this temple its own character.

The Chinese Temple combines Chinese and Vietnamese architectural styles. It includes replicas of shrines from the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites of Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar. The temple thus brings together references to four places in a single building.

The Indo-Japan Srilanka Temple houses an eight-metal Buddha statue transported from Japan. Another distinctive feature of the temple landscape is the lotus ponds at the Linh-Son Vietnam Chinese Buddhist Temple. Their different names and features help distinguish the individual temples when exploring Kushinagar’s Buddhist sites.

Museum and Water Features

The Kushinagar Museum houses statues, sculptures, seals, coins, banners and other antiquities from archaeological excavations. The collection brings together different types of objects: alongside images, seals, coins and banners are presented as distinct examples of material finds.

The museum’s stucco image of the Buddha is in the Gandhara style and is one of the museum’s main attractions. It adds to the archaeological collection a work whose design differs from the temples and monuments described in the town.

Water also features at some sites in Kushinagar. Meditation Park has water features and is near the Mahaparinirvana Shrine. The Linh-Son Vietnam Chinese Buddhist Temple, in turn, has lotus ponds. These details refer to the respective sites: water features in the park and lotus ponds at the temple.
