Mathura offers several ways to explore Krishna-related shrines, historical collections and pilgrimage routes of very different lengths. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether temples, a museum visit or a parikrama should take center stage. The specific places and route distances give each of these priorities its own character.

Temples and religious tradition

According to tradition, Shri Krishna Janambhoomi in Mathura is associated with Krishna’s appearance in Kansa’s prison. Photography is prohibited in the complex; check the current visitor rules before your visit. Another stop in Mathura is the Shri Dwarkadhish Temple. Its present structure was built in 1814. The main shrine houses a black marble image called Dwarkanath, accompanied by a white marble image of Radharani.

Vrindavan is home to several temples with different historical associations. The Radha Raman Temple was built around 1542 AD at the request of Gopala Bhatta Goswami. It houses Krishna’s original Shaligram shrine together with Radharani. The Sri Krishna Balrama Temple in Raman Reti, Vrindavan, was the first temple built by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). On the outskirts of Vrindavan, the Prem Mandir complex covers an area of 54 acres and is dedicated to Radha Krishna and Sita Ram. In Barsana, the historic Radha Rani Temple is the main attraction and draws very large numbers of devotees.

Collections and historic sites

The Government Museum Mathura preserves sculpture collections from the Maurya, Sunga, Kushan and Gupta periods. A visit to the museum therefore offers a different way to explore the area’s history than the temples: the focus here is on sculptures and their place in several historical periods.

Places beyond the temple complexes also cater to different sightseeing interests. Kusum Sarovar is a historic pond in Govardhan and lies along the Govardhan Parikrama route. If you are interested in the Yamuna, Vishram Ghat in Mathura offers the option of taking a boat ride on the river. Check the current boat services in advance.

Comparing pilgrimage routes

The Mathura district tourism website, last updated on September 9, 2026, lists the Govardhan Parikrama as 21 km, or 7 kos. It gives both the Vrindavan Parikrama and the Mathura Parikrama as 15 km, or 5 kos; the Gokul Parikrama is listed as 10 km. For Barsana, the figures distinguish between the longer circuit at 7 km and the shorter one at 4 km. These figures make it easier to compare the different route lengths before planning, without treating the different places and routes as the same.

The Brij Chaurasi Kos Parikrama is on a different scale: it is a 252-kilometer, seven-day pilgrimage through the Braj region. The individual parikramas and this longer journey therefore differ both in their stated distance and in duration.

Gokul and everyday travel in Mathura

Gokul lies on the scenic banks of the Yamuna and is associated with the Gokul Parikrama. Raman Reti in Gokul includes a deer sanctuary and temples, as well as a retreat area for ascetics, saints and pilgrims. Thus, Gokul brings together its riverside setting, the parikrama and Raman Reti’s distinctive features. The stated distance of 10 km for the Gokul Parikrama provides a specific point of reference when choosing a route.

Mathura Peda is another local specialty: this sweet is made from condensed milk, cardamom powder and khoya, a milk product. This culinary aspect complements visits to temples, the museum and the river.
