Dudhwa National Park is located in Lakhimpur Kheri district and is the only national park in Uttar Pradesh. The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve lies in the district, directly on the border between India and Nepal. This makes nature watching in the protected area, as well as temples and cultural attractions in the district, central to your trip.

Landscape and Wildlife in Dudhwa

The area of Dudhwa National Park is an extensive floodplain along the tributaries of the Mohana and Suheli rivers, crisscrossed by streams, lakes, and ponds. Other landscape features include extensive sal forests, marshes, grassland, and dense woodland. The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve covers a total of 818 km² and provides a habitat for tigers, one-horned rhinoceroses, elephants, blackbucks, and swamp deer. Dudhwa National Park and Kishunpur Pashu Vihar were combined to form the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in 1987.

The waters of the Dudhwa Reserve attract many migratory birds in winter, making the area interesting for birdwatching. More than 450 bird species can be observed there. This seasonal focus is useful when planning your trip: migratory birdwatching is particularly associated with winter, while spotting a tiger at Sharada Beat near Jhadi Tal depends on luck, even though the area is considered a good place for sightings.

Kishanpur and Nature Watching

Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1972 and is located 13 km from Bhira. Along the Sharada River, dense riverside forests with moisture-loving deciduous trees such as sal, teak, and jamun shape the landscape. Open meadows, valleys, and year-round streams attract animals and birds. At Jhadi Tal, visitors can observe numerous resident and migratory bird species found in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. Visitors have often spotted chital deer, barasingha, and otters there. At Jhadi Tal, nature watching ranges from numerous resident and migratory bird species to the frequently spotted chital deer, barasingha, and otters.

Temples, History, and Culture

The Frog Temple in Oel was built between 1860 and 1870 by the former king of the state of Oel and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is considered the only temple of its kind in India and is based on the Manduk Tantra. Its architecture is based on Tantra Vidya. A striking feature is the building behind a large frog figure and inside an octagonal lotus blossom. Its construction period, dedication, and unusual design make the temple a distinct attraction alongside Dudhwa’s nature and wildlife.

The Shiv Temple in Gola Gokaran Nath is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. Gola Gokaran Nath is also known as Chhoti Kashi. During the festive season, the Dussehra Mela is a major attraction in Lakhimpur Kheri district.
