Ghaziabad: Parks, Temples and City History
Accommodation in Ghaziabad
A stay in Ghaziabad can be planned around parks, temples, regional history or getting there. Swarn Jayanti Park combines historical displays with recreational activities and handicrafts; temples in Ghaziabad and the district add religious and historical themes.
Parks and Recreation at Swarn Jayanti Park
Swarn Jayanti Park is located in the Indirapuram neighbourhood of the city of Ghaziabad. Its statues depict Rani Lakshmi Bai, Sarojini Naidu, Meera Ben and other historical figures. The park also features a musical fountain that operates on late summer evenings, as well as a small pond where visitors can go boating. A variety of swings adds to the recreational facilities and makes the park appealing to families too. Visitors can buy handicrafts at Ghaziabad Hatt within the park. A visit here thus brings together monuments, outdoor activities and handicrafts in one place.
Temples and Religious Traditions
Mohan Nagar Temple is considered a historical temple, with a history dating back several hundred years. Its present form was built in 1978. The temple contains a large statue of the goddess and statues of numerous deities. The year refers to its present form, while its longer history is part of the temple’s historical context.
Dudheshwar Nath Mandir is entirely dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to tradition, it is also associated with Ravana’s meditation. Every year during Navratri, a major religious celebration takes place at Mahamaya Temple in the village of Sikri Khurd, in the city of Modinagar in Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh. In Modinagar, Lakshmi-Narayana Temple, Modi Garden and Sheetla Devi Mandir are also considered tourist attractions.
Further religious and historical associations can be found in various locations across the district. Dasna has an ancient goddess temple. Loni Fort is associated with Lavanasura from the time of the Ramayana; during the Hindu period, Loni also had a strong fortress. These themes offer different ways to shape your trip: religious dedications and celebrations alongside temple history and traditions.
History and Getting Around
A significant battle against the British took place on the banks of the Hindon on 30 and 31 May 1857. During the 1857 war, the entire Ghaziabad district was a theatre of military action. The district is considered an important gateway to Uttar Pradesh because it borders Delhi.
Transport links also offer a practical guide for your trip. Ghaziabad is an important Northern Railway station, where railway lines from Delhi to Calcutta, Moradabad and Saharanpur meet. By road, Ghaziabad is well connected to Delhi, Noida, Hapur, Modinagar, Bulandshahr, Meerut, Saharanpur, Haridwar, Dehradun, Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra. When choosing where to stay, consider whether getting there, the park, or the temples and historical sites will be the main focus of your trip.
