The Bulandshahr district offers very different reasons to visit: Khurja is known for its ceramic tradition, Kuchesar for an 18th-century fort, and the Ganges for its temples and pilgrimage sites. These attractions are spread across different places. To start planning your trip, choose what interests you most: ceramics, history or religious sites along the river.

Khurja and its ceramic tradition

Khurja is a city of potteries. There are more than 500 potteries in Bulandshahr district. The Khurja Pottery Industry produces new designs and ceramic tableware products every year. At the same time, Khurja has developed its own style in ceramic goods. This brings together a strong focus on craftsmanship and a steady stream of new designs. If you are interested in ceramic design, that is a concrete reason to include Khurja in your travel plans.

A family-friendly destination is also mentioned: Children Park in Ganga Nagar Colony is a special attraction for children. This offers a different reason to visit alongside Khurja’s ceramics. When choosing, consider whether you would rather focus on the craft tradition or this attraction for children.

Kuchesar Fort: history and location

Kuchesar Fort, also known as Mud Fort, was built in Kuchesar in 1734 and dates back to the 18th century. Its beginnings as a heritage resort go back to the restoration of part of Ajit Singh’s ancestral estate. The fort is surrounded by 100 acres of mangrove forest. Its history, restoration and described setting give this destination a different character from Khurja’s ceramic sites.

For orientation, Kuchesar Fort is seven kilometres from Chopla Kuchesar, on NH-24 towards Garh. If you choose Kuchesar as your main destination, you can plan to visit it specifically.

Temples, pilgrimage sites and the Ganges

The Khurja-Devi Temple is in Khurja, in Khurja Tehsil. It is an important centre of faith for the local population. The famous temple of the goddess Belon is in Belon village. In Ahar, on the banks of the Ganges, you will find the Avantika Temple; there is also a Shiva temple there. These sites give a trip through the district a religious dimension that differs from Khurja’s ceramic tradition and the history of Kuchesar Fort.

Anoopshahr is an old pilgrimage town on the Ganges. Religious bathing and festivals take place there throughout the year. If a particular festival is important to your trip, check its dates in advance. Narora is also on the Ganges, in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh. Several ghats there are used for ritual bathing in the river. The view from Narora Dam is considered especially picturesque. Karnavas is associated with Karna from the Mahabharata—another tradition that adds to the religious and story-rich character of the places in the district.

Planning your trip

Bulandshahr district is less than 64 kilometres from Delhi. Regular bus services connect Bulandshahr with other cities. Within the city, the Clock Tower is in Malka Park, in central Bulandshahr. This gives you both a regional overview and a specific point of reference in the city. Ceramics, the fort, temples and sites on the Ganges appeal to different interests; plan your trip according to which of these aspects of Bulandshahr interests you most.
