Erode: Temples, Rivers and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Erode
The Cauvery, Bhavani and Amudha rivers meet at Sangameswarar Temple. The temple is in Bhavani Kooduthurai, in Bhavani Town, Erode district. Riverside locations, religious heritage, archaeological evidence and natural areas shape the region’s destinations. When planning, it helps to keep in mind the names of individual places in the district as well as Erode itself.
Temple sites and religious traditions
Sangameswarar Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. On the banks of the Cauvery near Kodumudi stands Magudeswarar Temple, a rare Trimurthi Sthalam: Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma are worshipped in the temple complex. The main festivals at Sri Magudeeswarar and Veeranarayana Perumal Temple in Kodumudi include Adiperukku, Chithirai and Panguni Uthiram. Festival dates vary from year to year; check the dates if you would like to plan your trip around them.
In the village of Bannari, near Sathyamangalam, Arulmigu Sri Bannari Mariamman Temple stands at the foot of the Western Ghats, on the Erode–Mysore road. Bannari Mariamman is worshipped there as a powerful form of Shakti and as the guardian deity of the Kongu region. Chennimalai Murugan Temple stands on Chennimalai Hill. Arulmigu Velayuthaswamy Temple, commonly known as Thindal Murugan Temple, is also a hilltop temple in the district dedicated to Lord Murugan. Devotees climb around 150 steps to reach the shrine.
The Anthiyur Horse Fair offers a different example of religious tradition: it is held annually during the Aadi month festival near Gurunatha Swamy Temple in Anthiyur. Its timing is therefore tied to the festival month. If you would like to combine your trip with the event, check the relevant festival dates in advance.
Museum, archaeology and crafts
Government Museum Erode is located on the V.O.C. Park Campus in Erode. Its collections include inscriptions from the Kongu Chola kingdom, artefacts, handicrafts, Bargur stones, Thanjore paintings, manuscripts and prehistoric objects. The collection thus offers different perspectives on the district’s culture and past.
In Kodumanal, an ancient trading and industrial settlement from the Sangam period on the banks of the Noyyal, archaeological excavations revealed Roman trade links, bead-making, iron smelting and ancient burial sites. A visit focused on history here can therefore take in early trading contacts, as well as crafts and burial culture.
Bhavani Jamakkalam are traditional carpets and rugs made from cotton yarn on handlooms. The textiles from Bhavani have held GI status since 2005. Along with the museum and archaeological finds, this craft offers another view of the district’s culture.
Nature, birds and dams
Vellode Bird Sanctuary is in the village of Vadamugam Vellode, in Perundurai Taluk, and covers 77.185 hectares. From November to April, the sanctuary is visited by species including painted storks, spoonbills, coots, openbill storks and white ibis. The intensity of seasonal bird visits can vary. The Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats meet in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, which is in the Sathyamangalam and Thalavady taluks. In the Sathyamangalam Division, vehicle safaris for forest visits are offered to the public on weekends. Check availability before you travel.
The dams on the Bhavani River also differ in how they are built: Bhavanisagar Dam, also known as Lower Bhavani Dam, is an earth dam near Sathyamangalam and a major tourist attraction in the district. Historic Kodiveri Dam near Gobichettipalayam, by contrast, is a masonry dam. In the surrounding area, Bhavanisagar Dam Park offers entertainment for children and adults.
