Nilgiris: Landscapes, Gardens and Culture
Accommodation in Nilgiris
Nilgiris offers different themes to consider when planning your trip: viewpoints and waterfalls, gardens and plant collections, tea, and landscapes in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider which of these aspects of the region interests you most.
Distinctive natural features include mountain ranges, rocks and water. Information about them ranges from a specific viewpoint to the different habitats of the tiger reserve; the places below each offer their own impressions.
Viewpoints and waterscapes
At 2,623 metres above sea level, Doddabetta is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu and is surrounded by dense shola forest. The Telescope House at Doddabetta offers panoramic views across the district and beyond. Lamb’s Rock offers a different perspective: this steep cliff, several hundred metres high, provides a good view of the Coimbatore plains. Lamb’s Rock is also a picnic spot near Coonoor. Dolphin’s Nose, a rocky viewpoint overlooking St. Catherine Falls, is also near Coonoor.
The Pykara is the largest river in the Nilgiris district. Its last two waterfalls are 55 and 61 metres high, respectively. Boating is offered on Pykara Lake; availability may vary. In Glenmorgan, a viewpoint above the rest house offers panoramic views. There is also a tea plantation and a lake at the foot of the plantation, which serves as a forebay for the Pykara power station at Singara. Glenmorgan and Singara are picnic spots for tourists.
Forest and landscapes in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve
Mudumalai Tiger Reserve covers 321 square kilometres at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Its habitats include tropical evergreen forest, moist deciduous forest, moist and dry teak forest, secondary grassland and swamps. The area therefore encompasses several distinctly different types of landscape.
Visitors to the reserve can take a vehicle ride through the jungle along a designated visitor route. Visitor regulations may be subject to the requirements of the Forest Department. Boating on Pykara Lake and taking such a ride in the reserve are different ways to experience the landscape; the designated visitor route is part of the stated conditions for the vehicle ride.
Gardens and botanical diversity
Sims Park is both a park and a botanical garden. It was laid out more than a hundred years ago, following the natural contours of the land. Unusual deciduous and ornamental plant species from different parts of the world grow there. The Rose Garden in Ooty has a different focus: it features more than 3,000 varieties of roses. At the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty, plants and the annual flower show take centre stage.
Sims Park also combines its garden setting with an event: it hosts an annual vegetable and fruit show. The flower show at the Government Botanical Garden takes place every May as part of the Summer Festival in Ooty. The exact dates of both events vary from year to year.
Tea and culture
The Tea Factory and Museum introduces visitors to the history of the tea industry and tea-making processes in the Nilgiri region. It is a fitting choice for travellers who want to learn about the production and development of tea as well as the region’s landscapes and gardens.
The Tribal Museum is located in Udhagamandalam, on the campus of the Tribal Research Centre in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The museum displays artefacts from around 36 different tribal communities in Tamil Nadu. This look at the origins and diversity of the collection adds a cultural dimension to the nature and garden themes.
Getting there and planning your trip
The closest international airport to the Nilgiris district is Coimbatore, 105 kilometres away. Ooty is connected to Mettupalayam by a narrow-gauge railway, the “Toy Train.” These details provide two different points of reference for getting there: the airport and the railway connection. When planning, check the dates of the events mentioned and the current availability of boating if these are important to your trip.
