Amravati combines historical and cultural landmarks with hills and lakes.

Temples, Hills and City History

Shri Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal was founded in 1914 by Anant Krishna Vaidya and Ambadas Krishna Vaidya. The historic Amba Devi Temple stands on a hill in Amravati and is one of the city’s most important landmarks.

Another landmark is Maltekdi, a hill within the city. It is about 60 metres high, and a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stands at its summit. The cityscape therefore brings together a historic temple on a hill and a named viewpoint with a statue at its summit.

Lakes and Getting Your Bearings

Amravati is 340 metres above sea level. Chhatri Talao and Wadali Talao are in the eastern part of the city. Together with Maltekdi and the temple hill, the two lakes provide further specific landmarks for finding your way around the city.

These themes can help you organise the city for your trip planning: cultural history, hills and lakes offer different focal points. You can tailor your search for hotels in Amravati to the interests that matter for your stay.

The Wider Amravati Destination

The wider Amravati destination includes other landscapes and cultural attractions located across the region. They add to the picture of the city but should be distinguished from the city features mentioned above. Melghat Tiger Reserve is in the Satpura Range and is home to more than 1,000 plant species. The Melghat area was declared a tiger reserve in 1974. Wildlife safaris are offered at Melghat Tiger Reserve, where visitors may see tigers, leopards, sloth bears and wild dogs, among other animals. Check the latest safari conditions before making plans.

Chikhaldara is a hill station in Amravati district. There are opportunities for hiking and trekking there. Chikhaldara is also the only coffee-growing region in Maharashtra; visitors can tour coffee plantations and sample coffee. The Vairat jungle safari gate is also near Chikhaldara. Safaris there can be booked online or in person at the Nature Interpretation Centre in central Chikhaldara. Check the latest booking procedures before planning your trip.

History and cultural sites also shape the wider destination: Gawilgadh Fort has been designated a heritage site of special significance by the Central Archaeological Survey of India. Chatri Talao dates back to the 18th century; boat rides are offered on both parts of the water body. It is advisable to check the latest conditions for this activity in advance.

During the Navaratri festival at Shri Ambadevi Temple, which takes place shortly before Dasara, cultural and religious programmes are held over nine days. Specific annual arrangements may change, so check the relevant dates and programmes before planning your trip.
