When searching for hotels in Kozhikode, you can first consider which themes you would like to shape your stay: historic architecture, trade history, green spaces, coastal spots or science. The city offers different points of interest for each of these themes. You can plan your trip around the places and topics you would like to explore further.

Architecture, Temples and Trade

The present-day building of Tali Temple was constructed in the 14th century. Its two-storey, chariot-shaped sanctum is designed in the Kerala architectural style. Murals and granite sculptures depict stories from the Puranas. The temple’s architecture and imagery give it a distinct place in a culturally focused stay.

Associated with Tali Temple is Revathi Pattathanam, an annual seven-day cultural and intellectual event held in October or November. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific dates before finalising your plans.

S.M. Street, also known as Sweet Meat Street or Mittayitheruvu, is a 500-year-old marketplace in the centre of Kozhikode. It is 2.1 kilometres long. Its shops sell traditional handicrafts from Kerala, including coir products, wood carvings and brassware. Kozhikodan halwa and banana chips are also among the products sold there. During festivals and special occasions, the street features colourful decorations, cultural performances and community gatherings; however, this is not tied to any particular festival date.

Green Spaces and Coastal Attractions

Mananchira Square opened to the public in 1994. Its features include lawns, trees and plants, an artificial stream, hills, sculptures and an open-air theatre. The square thus brings together different landscape elements in one setting. It offers a different focus from historic temple architecture or the commercial life of S.M. Street.

Sarovaram Biopark has an ecological focus; its project aims to protect wetlands through sustainable, environmentally friendly tourism measures. Its wetlands and mangroves provide habitats for various plant species, including native and medicinal plants. More than 60 bird species have been recorded in the park. The open-air amphitheatre is intended for cultural events, performances and environmental education programmes. The management also conducts programmes and workshops on conservation, biodiversity and sustainable living.

Kozhikode Beach is a good place to watch the sunset. A marine aquarium with various fish species is located on the northern side of Calicut Beach. Dolphin’s Point at Kozhikode Beach is a lookout where dolphins may be seen. A sighting is possible, but not guaranteed. Lions Park is next to the old lighthouse at Calicut Beach and attracts young children.

Science and Other Interests

The Regional Science Centre’s planetarium has 250 seats and uses a Zeiss projector for its shows. Topics include the universe, planets and galaxies. This places Kozhikode’s scientific focus alongside its architecture, trade and nature, without combining these different interests into a single sightseeing programme.
