Feroke combines historical connections with a stretch of beach near the mouth of the Chaliyar, where surfing takes place. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in the town’s history, the beach, or other attractions in the wider destination of Kozhikode.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

You can reach Feroke from Kozhikode by regular bus services, taxis, and auto-rickshaws. Schedules and availability may vary, so check your connection before you set out. As a point of reference, the Southern Railway’s Shoranur–Mangalore line runs 2,504 kilometers from south to north through the municipality of Feroke.

History and Sacred Sites in Feroke

Tipu Sultan chose Feroke as the site for a fort during his Malabar campaign, intending to oversee his territories between Kozhikode and Palakkad from there. The gravestones still visible today in Chennapparamba, west of the railway station, are considered evidence of a local culture dating back to the Megalithic period, from 4000 BCE onward. Karuvanthiruthi Jaram is among Feroke’s traditional sacred sites.

Feroke’s historic selection as a factory site also had practical reasons: high-quality clay, a water supply, and transport links. The town’s history therefore spans a strategically planned fort, culture and sacred sites, and the factors that made it a suitable factory location at the time.

Surfing at the Beach

Kozhikode as a Wider Destination

Beyond Feroke’s local attractions, nature destinations are also a focus in the wider destination of Kozhikode. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is home to more than 60 different species of migratory birds. The mangrove forests of Kadalundi are a natural habitat for otters and jackals. Visitors can take boat tours or go hiking within the sanctuary. Aripara Waterfall, also known as Arippara Falls, is an excursion destination in Anakkampoyil near Thiruvambady Town in Kozhikode district and a tributary of the Iruvanjippuzha.

The cultural attractions across the wider destination of Kozhikode offer a range of experiences. Beypore is known for the centuries-old traditional craft of building Uru boats; visitors can watch the work and speak with the artisans. The Pazhassi Raja Museum and Art Gallery in Kozhikode displays ancient coins, pottery, and bronzes from Kerala’s early civilizations and regularly hosts workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs.

In Kozhikode, Mananchira Square is centered around Mananchira, an artificial freshwater pond dating back to the 14th century. Its open-air theater hosts traditional music and dance performances, theater productions, and public gatherings. At Beypore Beach, the Pulimuttu, built from stacked rocks, extends about 1 km into the sea.
