Surat between history, science and nature
Accommodation in Surat
A restored fort, collections on the city’s history, science exhibitions and green spaces along the Tapi give Surat many different facets. When planning your trip, you can compare the highlights: historic sites and museums, interactive and science experiences, or gardens and landscapes.
Fort, museums and cultural heritage
The restoration of Surat’s Historic Fort was ordered by the Government of Gujarat in 2015 and carried out under the leadership of the Surat Municipal Corporation. On September 29, 2022, India’s Prime Minister inaugurated the fort virtually. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum collection is housed in the fort. The museum in Chowkbazar was established in 1890 and preserves records of past professions, industries and crafts, as well as historical figures and clothing.
Surat Castle is a historic monument in the city. The Gujarat Sultanate had it built to protect against the Portuguese. The Dutch Cemetery is also one of Surat’s cemeteries designated as a protected monument. Those interested in different forms of cultural heritage can compare these sites with the museum collections: here, the fort and cemetery take centre stage as monuments; there, the collections focus on work, crafts, notable figures and clothing.
In Bardoli, the Sardar Patel National Museum displays rare photographs and dioramas from the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Its collection spans 20 rooms and documents different periods of his life. This gives it a different collection focus from the museum in Chowkbazar.
Science and interactive experiences
The Science Centre is on City Light Road in City Light Town, Surat. Its themed galleries are devoted to science and technology. At the planetarium, students and the general public can observe planets, the moon, stars and nebulae in a full-dome projection. KHOJ – Science + Art + Innovation Museum takes an interactive approach: visitors can explore exhibitions and concepts, take part and learn through play. A workshop space gives students and the community a place to learn and experiment.
The Jagadish Chandra Bose Aquarium is an underwater aquarium and is considered the first of its kind in India. It houses more than 100 fish species; if the exact number of species is important for your visit, check the latest information in advance. The experiences at the Science Centre and the aquarium are quite different: the former focuses on galleries and a projection of the night sky, while the latter showcases the underwater world.
Green spaces and routes along the Tapi
Sarthana Nature Park covers 81 acres; the Tapi lies to its north. The park is easily accessible by rail and road. Animal exhibits in recreated habitats and educational programmes aim to introduce visitors to wildlife conservation. This combines experiencing nature with an educational offering explicitly focused on conservation.
Sneh Rashmi Botanical Garden is located on the banks of the Tapi in Surat and is said to have more than 1,000 plant species. Alongside a toy train, Columbus, Injector, Free Fall Jump, Rocket Space, Crazy Jump and a hot-air balloon ride are listed as attractions. Since individual attractions may not always be available, check which ones are currently offered before your visit.
Festivals and the surrounding area
Navratri and Uttarayan are part of Surat’s festival culture. Navratri is considered the city’s most important festival, featuring Dandiya Raas and Garba performances. The kite festival of Uttarayan is also celebrated with great festivity and enthusiasm. These traditions offer a cultural contrast to the museums and science institutions: the focus here is on community celebrations and dances.
Dumas Beach is near Surat, 21 km southwest of the city. The beach, with its black sand, is popular with local residents and is considered a weekend picnic destination. Visitors can eat traditional foods there, such as Pav Bhaji, Bhajiya and Gathiya; offerings may vary. This makes it possible to add a nearby coastal destination to your stay in Surat without conflating the city’s varied attractions with the beach.
