Salt marshes, wetlands and historic buildings shape the diverse sides of Kachchh. The Great Rann, Dholavira and the coastal towns appeal to different travel interests—from nature watching and archaeology to regional culture. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide which places and themes will shape your trip.

Rann, Wetlands and Coast

The Rann of Kachchh is a salt marsh area in Kachchh district. It includes the Great Rann, the Little Rann and the Banni grassland. The region is home to flamingos and wild asses and includes several wildlife sanctuaries. Those especially interested in birds will find a notable attraction at Chhari Dhandh Wetland Conservation Reserve: it is home to around 370 bird species, including birds of prey, waterbirds, waders and larks. During the monsoon and winter seasons, the reserve attracts numerous migratory birds.

Pingleshwar also combines coastal scenery and nature watching: it is a golden-sand beach and wetland in Kachchh, and the beach attracts migratory birds. Mandvi Beach is known for watersports and sunset views. The two places therefore offer different coastal experiences, while Chhari Dhandh turns the focus to birdlife.

Another landmark in the landscape is the Black Hills. At 462 metres, they are the highest point in Kachchh; from there, the view stretches across the Great Rann. A 350-year-old temple dedicated to Dattatreya stands on the hills. There are hiking opportunities around the Black Hills; conditions may vary by route.

Archaeology, Architecture and Living Culture

Dholavira is an archaeological site on Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka, Kachchh district. Its strategic location on Khadir was intended to enable the use of various mineral and raw material sources and facilitate inland and overseas trade with the region of Magan, present-day Oman, and Mesopotamia. The site thus connects a specific landscape setting with the trade relations of its history.

Prag Mahal offers a different historical perspective. Rao Pragmalji II commissioned the palace; the first bricks were laid in 1865, and the design follows the Italian Gothic style. Visitors can explore the main rooms and climb the 45-metre-high clock tower. In Mandvi, part of the fort wall of the former trading centre remains. At Lakhpat Fort, visitors can climb the surviving ramparts; from there, the sea is in view. A 16th-century Gurdwara also stands within the walls. According to tradition, Guru Nanak stopped there twice during his second Udasi (1506–1513) and fourth Udasi (1519–1521).[ [H_0016]]

The recurring Rann Utsav lasts three to four days and takes place at various locations within Kachchh. The programme includes folk music and dance, among other things; the festival also showcases handicrafts, cultural communities and the region’s ecological diversity. Two fairs are held annually at Narayan Sarovar: one in Chaitra (April–May), the other from the tenth to the fifteenth day of Kartik (November–December). If you want to plan your trip around a fair, check the dates in advance.

Handicrafts, Cuisine and Getting There

In the village of Nirona, Rogan painting—a 300-year-old art form originating in Iran—is practised in India by just one extended family. Various works on fabric can be seen in the workshop; check whether a visit is possible before you go. Cuisine is also part of the region’s character: Kachchhi dishes include roti or rotla, curd, buttermilk, dal, curry, vegetables, papad and kachumbar. Dabeli originated in Mandvi, Kachchh; the dabeli masala made there is still considered especially authentic.

Kachchh can be reached from major cities in Gujarat by state-run and private buses. There are metre- and broad-gauge rail lines; daily trains run from Bhuj to Mumbai and Delhi via Ahmedabad. As timetables may change, check connections before planning your trip.
