Culture and Nature in the Wider Region
Baoshan Museum: Architecture and Cultural History
The state-run, nonprofit Baoshan Museum is dedicated to collecting and exhibiting cultural artifacts, education, field archaeology, and heritage conservation. Its responsibilities also include historical and cultural research. The building is modeled on the shape of an ancient bronze drum excavated locally. It is 19.6 meters high and has a maximum diameter of 56.6 meters. Visitors interested in archaeology will find both an institution with a focus on the subject and a building whose design references an excavated object.
According to its opening schedule published in February 2025, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last admission is at 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, except for public holidays. Check the museum’s latest notice before visiting.
Yiluo Pond: Mythology, Remembrance, and Reading Spaces
Yiluo Pond, formerly known as Jiulong Pond, is associated with the Jiulong mythology of the ancient Ailao Kingdom and preserves memories of the War of Resistance in western Yunnan. In Longyang, it is regarded as a central landmark of the historic and cultural city and a place where residents can relax. This regional site brings together mythological traditions and memories of a later historical conflict.
The pavilion on the lake contains the “Zhuoying” reading area, a reading and leisure space, and a shelf of Baoshan literature. A winding greenway also runs through the grounds. The pond’s cultural connections and reading spaces offer a different focus from the museum’s architecture: here, tradition, remembrance, and literature take center stage.
Qinghua Hai: Wetlands, Lakes, and Biodiversity
Qinghua Hai National Wetland Park covers 1,363 hectares. A total of 251 bird species, 992 plant species, 18 fish species, 12 amphibian species, and 14 reptile species have been recorded there. Later surveys may change these inventory figures. The numbers give an idea of the range of groups recorded, while birdwatching offers a specific point of interest for visitors interested in nature.
Tourist attractions include the landscapes of the West and East Lakes and the Yongzi Go Academy. The academy introduces visitors to Yongzi culture and the history of Go. East Lake features a lake area, a lakeside pier, a cascade waterfall, and the Rainbow Bridge. The park also offers opportunities to relax by the water, visit the lakes, exercise, and enjoy recreational activities. Nature observation and relaxation are therefore paired with a cultural theme focused on the history of Go.
Taibao Mountain: Forest Park and Daoist Architecture
The planned area of Taibao Provincial Forest Park is 485.7 hectares, with forest cover of 90 percent. The hectare figure refers to the planned park area, while the percentage indicates forest cover. The park offers residents and visitors nonprofit opportunities for relaxation, tourism, and exercise.
Yuhuang Pavilion is also located on Taibao Mountain. It was designated a national key cultural relic protection unit in 2006 and is one of the largest and best-preserved Daoist architectural complexes from the Ming dynasty in western Yunnan. Its site area is reported to be about 5,000 square meters, with a building footprint of about 2,000 square meters. The heritage designation and the building measurements convey different aspects: the complex’s historical classification and its spatial scale.
Renshoumen: A District with Several Heritage Categories
Renshoumen Historic and Cultural District was designated a provincial-level historic and cultural district in Yunnan in January 2022. It covers 17.89 hectares. Its heritage includes three immovable cultural relics, nine historic buildings, 113 buildings with traditional architectural features, nine traditional lanes, and 20 elements of intangible cultural heritage. These categories range from architectural landmarks and buildings to lanes and intangible heritage. Renshoumen complements the museum and pavilion architecture with a district whose cultural heritage spans several different forms.
