Tangshan’s tourist attractions showcase both the transformation of former mining sites and a distinctive industrial heritage. The Tangshan Nanhu·Kailuan Tourist Area is designated a national 5A-level tourist attraction. It includes Kailuan National Mine Park and the Tangshan Nanhu Scenic Area in the city center. Mining history and Nanhu’s transformed landscape thus come together within a single tourist area.

Green Urban Spaces Created from Mining Sites

Nanhu lies in southern Tangshan. The area, originally 1,800 hectares of mining subsidence near the city center, has been extensively restored since 1997 and transformed into a green urban landscape with bodies of water, lush vegetation and numerous waterbirds. Nanhu represents a long-term transformation of the cityscape: an area shaped by mining subsidence has become a green space with water and vegetation. For travelers, this contrast offers a distinctive way to experience Tangshan, alongside the history of mining itself.

Tangshan Flower Sea is also part of this story of transformation, though in a different location: It lies on the boundary between the city center and Kaiping District, on the former coal-mining site of the Kailuan Mine’s Majia Gou site. It is a large-scale ecological restoration project. Nanhu and Flower Sea can therefore be viewed as different examples of the transformation of former mining sites, without suggesting that they are the same landscape or share the same history.

Industrial History at Kailuan

Kailuan National Mine Park is the industrial counterpart to Nanhu’s green landscape. One specific historical landmark is Shaft No. 1 of the Kailuan Group’s Tangshan Mine, located in the city: it was sunk in 1878. Mechanized mining has taken place there for more than 140 years; the Tangshan Mine was the first mechanized coal mine in mainland China. These details connect a specific place with a long industrial history. Together with Kailuan National Mine Park’s role as part of the 5A-level tourist area, they give mining a clearly defined place among Tangshan’s main visitor attractions.

Historical Culture in the City Center

Peiren Historical Culture Street offers another perspective. This historic cultural and lifestyle district, created by the Tangshan Cultural Tourism Group, lies in the center of Tangshan’s industrial historical and cultural area. Its character is defined by architecture in a traditional style, nostalgic culture and modern commercial uses. The street was also selected as one of the first national tourist and leisure streets. This sets it apart both from Nanhu’s transformed landscape and from the industrial focus of Kailuan National Mine Park: here, historical culture and modern commercial uses shape the district together.

Routes and Different Travel Interests

The Super Green Route connects several of Tangshan’s attractions. It links Nanhu and Tangshan Flower Sea and also passes the Tangshan Industrial Museum, Qixin 1889 Cultural and Creative Industrial Park, Peiren Historical Culture Street and Kailuan National Mine Park. It is useful to distinguish between them: Nanhu and Flower Sea represent the transformation of mining sites, while Kailuan and Peiren Historical Culture Street offer different ways to explore industrial and urban culture. The route connects these places without turning them into a single theme.

Sports facilities add another dimension to the tourist area. Tangshan Nanhu·Kailuan and its surrounding areas have been developed to include, among other facilities, a football park, a city football pitch, a football-themed hotel and a 16.9-kilometer fitness trail. The area thus encompasses sports as well as landscape and cultural attractions. Depending on whether you are most interested in the transformation of mining sites, industrial history, the urban cultural district or sports facilities, you can choose different focuses for your trip to Tangshan.
