Handan Dao: a district with history and a present-day character

The historic and cultural district of Handan Dao stretches along the two main thoroughfares, Renmin Street and Congtai Street. It is considered a landmark of Handan and brings together cultural tourism, leisure and shopping. The district therefore offers both historical themes and contemporary cultural experiences.

Handan Dao includes Huiche Alley and Xuebu Bridge. The alley is associated with the story of the reconciliation between Lin Xiangru and Lian Po; the bridge with the Handan story of “learning in Handan.” Both places connect with different narrative themes: reconciliation on the one hand, and learning in Handan on the other. Cixi Palace and Hanshan Academy are also among the district’s historical and cultural features.

The range of immersive cultural experiences in Handan Dao includes artificial intelligence, scripted entertainment, costume design and workshops for intangible cultural heritage. Individual commercial offerings may change. In this way, the district combines its historical themes with various forms of cultural leisure.

City history, ceramics and idioms

Handan Museum offers two different thematic perspectives. The permanent exhibition “Splendour of Gandan” presents Handan’s development from ancient times to the present. The museum also features a permanent thematic exhibition on Cizhou ceramics. This brings together a broad overview across time and a clearly defined focus on ceramics.

Language and traditional expressions take centre stage at Zhaoyuan Idiom Theme Park: it features more than 100 proverbs and idioms associated with or referring to Handan. This adds a different perspective on Handan’s cultural themes to the historic sites. If you are interested in language and stories, this wide range of examples offers a distinct thematic focus.

Gardens and an archaeological ruins park

Congtai Park is a large garden in the central section of Zhonghua Street in Handan. It was created around Wuling Congtai, a raised platform made of blue bricks. Two specific features come together here: the gardens and a distinctive historic structure. The park is therefore a point of interest in its own right for travellers interested in landscaped green spaces as well as Handan’s stories.

The Zhao Wangcheng Archaeological Ruins Park offers a different perspective. On 29 December 2022, it was added to the national list of archaeological ruins parks. The completed park also serves Handan residents as a place for recreation and sports activities. Its archaeological classification and its use by residents describe two different aspects of the park.
