Discover Panjin: wetlands and culture

Panjin can be explored through two distinct themes: the wetlands of nearby Red Beach and cultural sites centered on calligraphy, folk traditions and regional history. Red Beach is located in Zhaoguanghe Town, Dawa District, Panjin. If you are weighing nature and culture for your trip, you can consider these as separate areas of focus.

Wetlands at Red Beach

An official tourism description from 2020 portrays Red Beach as a wetland landscape with reed beds, extensive shallow tidal flats, numerous waterbirds and red seepweed plants. Open tidal flats and reeds meet the striking color of the plants. Red Beach covers more than 200,000 mu; this area figure should be understood as an approximation. The landscape is therefore shaped not just by individual plants or animals, but by the interplay of reeds, tidal flats and birdlife.

Visitor information and activities

A description published in 2024 states that electronic tickets for the Red Beach National Scenic Corridor can be purchased through WeChat, Douyin and vending machines. It also lists a visitor center, boardwalks, covered rest areas, viewing platforms and toilets. As operating details may change, it is advisable to check current ticket options and facilities before your visit.

A seasonal travel recommendation from 2020 describes boat trips on Wolong Lake. The trip passes through reed beds and offers a view of the wetlands from the water. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available.

Calligraphy and folk traditions

The Liaohe Stele Forest is dedicated to calligraphy. Its exhibition area includes 700 stele monuments and 1,064 inscribed stone tablets. Examples range from early characters and oracle bone inscriptions to calligraphy from various dynasties. The Liaohe Stele Forest is described as China’s only stele forest with an unbroken history; its ensemble of buildings in an ancient style is considered the largest in Northeast China to date.

The similarly named Liaohe Stele Forest Park is a separate site. The oval park is surrounded by water and covers a total of 167 hectares: 100 hectares of land and 67 hectares of water. The two names therefore refer to different places. The Liaohe Folk Museum offers another point of interest: a city government article from January 2026 mentions nearly 10,000 folk-culture exhibits illustrating the millennia-old cultural history of the Liaohe River region.

Art and regional culture

Guangsha Art Street in Xinglongtai District includes galleries and artists’ studios, regional craft shops, food and drink businesses, a library and a cultural center. A tourism feature from 2025 mentions more than 100 resident artists from different parts of China as well as South Korea, Russia and Japan. This figure reflects the status at the time of publication; the number may change.

Traditional crafts are also part of the cultural theme. At the opening event of the Panjin Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall in June 2026, wood carvings by the Sun family of Panjin, reed paintings from Panjin, button art by the Wu family of Panjin and opera masks were displayed. Cultural practitioners demonstrated traditional techniques at the event.

A tourist route published in 2026 runs from Liaohe Old Street in Yingkou via the Liaohe Folk Museum in Xinglongtai District to the Red Beach Scenic Corridor in Dawa District. On this route, the museum is associated with Liaohekou fishermen’s cuisine. The “Liaohe Wetland 10,000-Person Hiking Event,” held in connection with Liaohe Wetland Park and Liaohe Stele Forest Park, is also listed as a signature event in 2026.
