Jingmen: Culture and History
Accommodation in Jingmen
Three specific cultural sites in Jingmen are the restored Democracy Street, with its preserved bluestone paving; the Jingmen Museum, with the Guodian Chu Slips and the “Warring States female corpse”; and Longquan Park, with garden scenes, a dialect wall, and memorial halls. Jingmen specialties such as Aizi pastries, Nanqiao steamed buns, and Shipai tofu are also available on Democracy Street; traditional crafts there include dough figurines and sugar painting.
History and Local Traditions on Democracy Street
Democracy Street in the center of Jingmen dates back to the Song dynasty and was an important hub on the Jingxiang Ancient Road. Its restored appearance reflects this history: the bluestone paving was preserved, and traditional materials and techniques were used to restore the street’s historic look. This brings together its historical significance and the visible features of the restored street.
Jingmen specialties such as Aizi pastries, Nanqiao steamed buns, and Shipai tofu are available on Democracy Street. Traditional crafts are also on offer: dough figurines and sugar painting. History, food, and crafts each provide a different focus here, so the street is more than just its historic paving.
Memorial Sites and Museum Collections
The Military-Civilian Cooperation Restaurant is one of the few surviving revolutionary memorial buildings in Jingmen. It was a red stronghold on the Xianghe Defense Line during the War of Resistance Against Japan. After its restoration, the building was converted into a memorial hall documenting the history of the resistance. Unlike the streetscape of Democracy Street, the focus here is on the memory of the war.
At the Jingmen Museum, the Guodian Chu Slips are recognized by international scholars as the world’s earliest surviving original books. The collection also includes the “Warring States female corpse.” It is 200 years older than the Western Han female mummy from Mawangdui and is described as China’s “first wet mummy.” The collection offers different points of connection with the past: early written records and an archaeological find with a distinctive designation.
Beer History and Local Experiences
The Beer Expo Hall is located on Democracy Street, on the former site of the Golden Dragon Spring Brewery. It showcases more than 20 beer products as well as historical photographs. The brewing process is explained, from malt and hops to the strontium-rich water of Zhanghe. Alongside the exhibition, the hall features a maze made of beer crates and an interactive area where visitors can experience being a “brewer for a day” or take part in a brewing session. If you plan to try one of these interactive activities, check its current availability before your trip.
Longquan Park offers a different focus. It combines garden scenes with a dialect wall highlighting Jingmen’s distinctive features, as well as memorial halls with a strong historical character. The park opened in 1987 and was included on the list of China’s 100 famous gardens in 1999. Garden motifs, local language, and memorial sites thus come together in one park—another cultural experience from the historic street layout and specialties of Democracy Street.
