Enshi offers several different themes to consider when planning a trip: sites connected with wartime history, attractions related to Tujia and Tusi culture, and a rafting route on the Qingjiang River. These destinations are in different locations and offer different experiences. If you choose Enshi as your destination, you can therefore consider the cultural sites and river scenery as separate themes rather than combining them into a single itinerary.

History and Tujia Culture

The Enshi Anti-Japanese War History Exhibition Hall is located at 6 Park Street in the old Liujiaoting district. It is housed in a former office building of the Enshi Party and County Committee, which is protected as an important cultural heritage site in Hubei Province. The exhibition focuses on the relocation of the Hubei provincial government and the headquarters of the Sixth War Zone to Enshi after the fall of Wuhan. Documents, photographs, models, and multimedia present this historical context. The city’s history is thus connected with the political and military events that shaped Enshi during the war.

A digital presentation featuring digital scenarios and high technology, which recreates historical events, is also documented for 2023. An online exhibition shares collection items and stories from Enshi. This digital presentation complements the documents and models with another form of interpretation; the specific technology may change.

Enshi Daughter City is located in Qiliping on the outskirts of the city and is designed as a tourist leisure district in the architectural style of a traditional Tujia old town. Enshi City has also recognized the site as a base for the transmission and performance of intangible cultural heritage. Its architecture and cultural role give it a different focus from the exhibition hall: Tujia traditions and the interpretation of living cultural heritage take center stage here.

Enshi Tusi City is an attraction dedicated to Tusi culture in the urban area of Enshi. Within the complex, Jiujintang is among the features specifically mentioned for visitors. Three historic sites have another, clearly time-limited connection to the old town: South Gate Tower, Wusheng Palace, and Wenchang Shrine were included in a 2022 cultural event in Enshi’s old town, Shizhou Ancient City. This reference places them within an event at that time; it does not indicate that the event recurs.

Qingjiang Chuangtan: Rafting and Scenery

Qingjiang Chuangtan runs along the Qingjiang River from the urban area of Enshi toward Hunshuihe Bridge and is 13 kilometers long. On a rafting trip, inflatable rafts travel through five gorges and 48 rapids. Steep cliffs rise along the banks; the scenery also includes unusual rock formations, waterfalls, and springs. Water conditions may vary by season. If you are planning a rafting trip, check in advance whether it is currently available and what safety requirements apply.

The cultural sites and Qingjiang Chuangtan differ not only in their themes but also in the kinds of experiences they offer: the exhibition and historic sites present history and cultural connections, while the river route is about rafting and scenery. When planning your trip, it helps to decide first which focus interests you most. The references to Liujiaoting, Qiliping, and the urban area help identify the respective locations without implying that they form a combined itinerary.
