If you are looking for a hotel in Shangqiu, you can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most: historic urban form, literary heritage, fire culture, or museum architecture. The Shangqiu Ancient City offers a specific historical focus; other cultural sites have their own emphasis. When choosing, it is helpful to distinguish between the built layout, literary connections, guided interpretation, and museums. For programs for visitor groups or school students, check in advance whether the specific activity is scheduled for the time of your visit.

Shangqiu Ancient City: Urban Layout and Historical Status

The Shangqiu Ancient City was recognized as a national historical and cultural city in 1986. It is also a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction. The two designations refer to different classifications: historical and cultural recognition on the one hand, and a tourism rating on the other.

The Ancient City was built in 1511, the sixth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty. The complex includes a brick-built city, a city lake, and an outer city. Together, the city wall, outer city, and city lake form a round exterior with a square interior. The complex is therefore defined by more than its individual historic elements: its overall spatial form is also part of its distinctive character.

Literary Connections and Guided Interpretation

Zhuanghui Hall in the Shangqiu Ancient City is associated with Hou Fangyu, a writer of the late Ming and early Qing periods, and attracts visitors. At the site of Yanbo Terrace, guides told visitor groups stories about Yanbo, as well as about his observation of the stars and development of the calendar.

Ba Guan Zhai is located by the Gusu River south of the city. It features an inscription in the hand of Tang calligrapher Yan Zhenqing, bearing the text “Ba Guan Zhai Hui Bao De Ji.” The three sites have different emphases: Zhuanghui Hall represents a literary connection, Ba Guan Zhai represents calligraphy and inscription, and Yanbo Terrace represents stories about star observation and the development of the calendar.

Fire Culture and Study Programs

The Fire Culture Museum explains the history of human use of fire through displayed artifacts and reconstructed scenes of ancient production. The presentation combines tangible objects with recreated scenes, offering two different approaches to the same subject.

A 2025 description lists five themed study routes and more than twenty special courses for the Shangqiu Ancient City scenic area. Routes and courses may continue to evolve; if you would like to include a particular program in your plans, check whether it is currently being offered.

A 2025 description recounts student activities at Huoshen Terrace and the Suihuang Mausoleum. At Huoshen Terrace, students made pottery with fire patterns; one student also rode in a reconstructed Wang Hai ox cart. At the Suihuang Mausoleum, students practiced making fire by drilling into wood. These examples are part of student programs. Ask in advance whether a similar program will be offered at the time of your visit.

Museum and Views Across the City

The Shangqiu Museum, a comprehensive city museum, was founded in October 1983. Its architecture draws on elements of the culture of the ancient city and Shang culture. The building’s design thus incorporates two cultural points of reference. Those interested in architecture will find here a different way to engage with Shangqiu’s cultural themes than at the literary sites.

A 2026 description of the visitor experience recounts visitors looking out across the city from the city wall. If you would like to include this view in your plans, check access in advance for the time of your visit. This lets you choose between the view from the wall and the historical, literary, or museum themes you would like to explore in greater depth in Shangqiu.
