When looking for a hotel in Kaifeng, you can first consider which cultural themes you would like to shape your stay. The attractions range from a pagoda and a temple to a large cultural theme park. This lets you choose places to visit based on architecture, history or staged Song-era culture, rather than grouping every stop under a single theme.

Kaifeng Iron Pagoda

The Kaifeng Iron Pagoda was built in 1049. It is octagonal, glazed, has thirteen stories and stands 55.08 metres above ground. Its design and dimensions give this attraction a distinct architectural character. The pagoda survived repeated wars, floods and earthquakes. In 1961, the State Council designated it as one of China’s first nationally protected major cultural heritage sites.

Iron Pagoda Park in spring

Iron Pagoda Park is in the northeast of Kaifeng’s urban area and is classified by the state as a 4A-rated tourist attraction. In spring, numerous cherry trees bloom there, drawing visitors who come to take photographs. If cherry blossoms are a highlight of your visit, this seasonal feature can serve as a distinct point of reference when planning your trip.

Temple architecture and history

Since its reconstruction during the Qing period, Daxiangguo Temple has largely retained an axial layout running from south to north. The sequence comprises a gate or tower structure, the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the glazed Eight Treasures Hall and the Sutra Repository. Visitors can follow the north–south arrangement as an architectural theme, rather than viewing each hall in isolation.

The temple also houses an approximately seven-metre-high, fully gilded, four-faced thousand-armed and thousand-eyed Guanyin statue. Craftsmen during the Qianlong period carved it from a large ginkgo tree. The temple bell is another distinct cultural heritage feature: the Xiangguo Frost Bell was cast in 1768, is about four metres high and weighs more than 10,000 jin. It is famous and is counted among Kaifeng’s Eight Scenic Views.

The historical perspective extends beyond the buildings. Kaifengfu was an important institution during the Northern Song period, administering the capital and its metropolitan hinterland. Kaifeng therefore offers a view of both architectural heritage and its earlier administrative history.

Cultural experiences at the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden

The Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is a large cultural theme park in Kaifeng, reconstructed at a 1:1 scale based on Zhang Zeduan’s famous painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.” The grounds cover more than 600 mu. The park was developed as a venue for performances and experiences related to intangible cultural heritage, and incorporates numerous showcases of national intangible cultural heritage.

Visitors can stroll among pavilions and halls in Hanfu clothing and watch folk performances. The garden’s third phase included the introduction of the immersive nighttime live-action show “Yue Fei·Yancheng Victory,” featuring horseback battle scenes. Another nighttime offering, “Night Tour Qing Garden,” was introduced in recent years as an experience of Song culture. If you are planning an evening specifically around one of these formats, check the current schedule.

The Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden also includes Dongjing Food Workshop Snack Street and a Food City with numerous regional snacks. Alongside architecture and performances, the theme park thus offers specific places to sample local snacks.

These different themes can help you choose places to visit: at Daxiangguo Temple, you can follow a clear spatial arrangement; the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden combines a reconstruction of a painting with performances across a larger site. The pagoda, in turn, stands out for its design, dimensions and history of protection.
