Guangdong: Sandstone Landscapes and Cultural Sites
Accommodation in Guangdong
The red sandstone of Danxia Mountain forms the foundation of a striking landscape: weathering and erosion have shaped it into peak forests, gorges, cliffs, and rock pillars. The mountain is divided into five scenic areas: Yangyuan Stone, Elder Peak, Xianglong Lake, Wolonggang, and Baoding. Attractions include Yangyuan Stone, Turtle Exploring the Sea, Xiantao Stone, and Teapot Peak. Those interested in geological formations will find both distinctive rock formations and a division into larger scenic areas here.
Sandstone, Forest, and Biodiversity
Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve is known for its lakes and Buddhist sanctuaries, such as Baiyun and Qingyun temples. Centuries-old forests are also part of Dinghushan, which was designated China’s first nature reserve. The reserve is home to 1,778 species of higher wild plants, 267 bird species, 77 reptile and amphibian species, 41 mammal species, and 836 species of large fungi. Future surveys may change these biodiversity figures.
Danxia Mountain and Dinghushan offer different natural highlights: Danxia Mountain focuses on sandstone landscapes shaped by erosion, while Dinghushan combines lakes, forests, and biodiversity with Buddhist sanctuaries. This lets you choose nature experiences based on landforms or on the combination of forests, wildlife and plant life, and religious sites.
A Loop Trail at Luofu Mountain
At the foot of Luofu Mountain, a seven-kilometer loop trail around the Dadong Reservoir passes through wetlands, forest, and farmland. The route is suitable for cycling and hiking. It offers a different way to experience the landscape from the geological formations of Danxia Mountain: here, the focus is on a loop trail and the transitions between the different types of areas mentioned. Facilities and trail conditions may change; check current conditions before your trip.
Archaeology and Architecture
Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area in Foshan’s Nanhai District has several protected-area and tourism designations: it is a state-level scenic area of special importance, a national 5A-rated tourist attraction, a national forest park, and a national geopark. At Shiyan Rock, visitors can take a boat through part of an ancient production site that lies underwater. Since boat operations may be subject to change, check the current conditions for boat trips before your visit.
The Pingmiangang archaeological site at Xiqiao Mountain also reaches far back into the past. It contains remains from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. The Paleolithic deposits are more than 40,000 years old; the Neolithic ones are generally dated to between 5,900 and 5,000 years ago. Future research may refine these archaeological dates.
In Guangzhou, the Tomb of the Nanyue King and the Nanyue Palace Site illustrate Lingnan’s political, economic, and cultural development during the Qin and Han periods. These two sites offer a historical focus that differs from the prehistoric traces at Xiqiao Mountain.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in Guangzhou draws attention to the decorative design of a building: its doors, windows, screens, walls, railings, roof beams, and ridges feature elaborate craftsmanship. Materials include wood, stone, brick, stucco, and ceramics, as well as cast copper and iron. The variety of architectural elements and materials makes the hall a specific point of interest for anyone interested in architecture and craft details.
In Kaiping, Liyuan combines traditional garden art, elements of Lingnan water towns, and Western architectural styles. The estate is designated as part of a national 5A-rated scenic area. Together with the Nanyue sites and the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Liyuan offers another perspective on Guangdong’s cultural sites—this time through the combination of garden art and different architectural traditions.
