For a stay in Tianshui, cultural history and regional food culture can offer different points of focus. The historic old town, individual temples and memorial sites, and Tianshui Guagua represent different ways to explore the city: a historic urban landscape, religious and historical connections, and a regional specialty. When choosing a hotel in Tianshui, these interests can help shape the focus of your trip.

Old Town and Historic Memorial Sites

Tianshui Old Town is in Xiguan, a neighborhood in Qinzhou District, and is a tourist area. Its historic urban fabric includes residential courtyards from the Ming and Qing periods, as well as old streets, lanes, and trees. The old town can therefore be appreciated not only through individual buildings: its streetscapes and trees are also part of its historic character.

The former residence of Feng Guorui, a Tianshui scholar, offers a different perspective. It dates from the late Qing period, and 26 rooms have been preserved. While the old town represents a larger urban setting, the residence is associated with a particular scholar. The number of rooms adds a concrete impression of the surviving building fabric to this biographical connection.

The Tomb of Li Guang is a cenotaph for the Western Han general Li Guang. Its preserved features include a stone horse from the Han period, a sacrificial pavilion from the Qing period, a tomb stele, and an inscription written by Chiang Kai-shek. The different historical periods represented by the stone horse and the sacrificial pavilion give the site a historical perspective distinct from that of Feng Guorui’s former residence.

Temples and Regional Cultural History

Yuquan Temple is one of Qinzhou’s eight scenic attractions. It is also a national key cultural relic protection site and a 4A-rated tourist area. At Fuxi Temple in Qinzhou District, its dedication draws attention to a different aspect: founded during the Chenghua era of the Ming dynasty, it is considered one of the earliest and best-preserved temples dedicated to Fuxi.

Bingling Temple is located in the Wuqü River valley near Qinzhou District. It is a Gelug school Tibetan Buddhist temple and a 3A-rated tourist area. Both its religious affiliation and its location in the river valley are part of how the site is characterized. Among the tourist areas, Tianshui Old Town and Bingling Temple are each rated 3A, while Yuquan Temple is rated 4A. Tourist ratings may change.

Tianshui Guagua: Regional Food Culture

Tianshui Guagua is a traditional snack from Tianshui in Gansu, made from buckwheat starch. It is described as fragrant and spicy, as well as soft and tender. Its origins are dated to the Western Han dynasty. The preparation technique was included in the fourth list of intangible cultural heritage of Gansu Province, with Qinzhou District designated as the application area.

With Tianshui Guagua, culinary tradition and the inherited preparation technique go together, but they are different points of view: descriptions of flavor and texture characterize the snack, while the cultural heritage designation concerns the technique. Guagua is a traditional snack from Tianshui in Gansu. For your trip planning, it adds another dimension to the historic sites: alongside temples, the old town, and memorial sites, regional food culture is a topic in its own right.
