Discover Jiayuguan: Hotels Between the Great Wall and Culture
Accommodation in Jiayuguan
Jiayuguan brings together the history of the Ming-era Great Wall of China, museums, landscapes and a range of leisure destinations. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights: Wall sites tell the story of the western defensive line, museums explore history and urban development, while parks and a winery offer different experiences.
The Ming Great Wall and Historic Sites
Jiayu Pass is located in the municipality of the same name and marks the starting point of the western section of the Ming-era Great Wall of China. Nearby is the Overhanging Great Wall, on the eastern slope of Heishan, north of Shiguan Gorge. It was an important passage on the ancient Silk Road and part of the western defensive system of the Ming Great Wall. Also nearby is the First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall of China, the westernmost beacon tower on the Ming-era wall.
Another glimpse into the past awaits at the brick mural tombs from the Wei and Jin dynasties. They belong to the Guoyuan–Xincheng tomb group in Xincheng, about 18 kilometers east of Jiayuguan’s urban area. The wider area contains more than 1,000 tombs from this period and is known as an “underground gallery.” This figure refers to the area as a whole, not just the brick mural tombs.
Museums and Urban History
The Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum focuses its exhibits on the history and culture of the Great Wall of China. It is China’s first specialist museum devoted to this subject. The Jiayuguan City Museum adds the story of the city itself: documented in 2024, the urban culture exhibition “Great Wall · Steel City” explores Jiayuguan’s cultural identities as a Great Wall city and a steel industry city. Another exhibition documented in 2024, “Pearl of the Gobi – Jiayuguan’s Development Achievements,” presents the city’s recent development and achievements. Before your trip, check which exhibitions will be on during your visit.
Scenery and Leisure
The East Lake Ecotourism Area includes an artificial lake covering 560,000 square meters. Green promenades, viewing pavilions, bridges and a landing stage define the site. It also has a sporting history: in 2006, it was designated as a training base and a dedicated triathlon venue; international triathlon scoring races and Asian triathlon championships were held there.
The Xincheng Caohu National Wetland Park, in the vicinity of Jiayuguan, covers 3,000 hectares. Of this, 1,379 hectares are designated as the planned core area and 488.6 hectares as wetlands. These figures describe different protection and planning areas and should not be understood as equivalent subdivisions.
Winery and Theme Parks
At Zixuan Winery, visitors can observe the winemaking process, from harvesting, destemming, pressing, fermentation, sulfur treatment and blending through to bottling and sealing, and take part in a wine tasting. In April 2010, the winery was rated a national Class 4A industrial tourism site by the National Tourism Administration. Check the current visitor arrangements before you go.
Jiayuguan Fantawild Adventure features more than 20 large themed areas and hundreds of themed, ride, leisure and landscape attractions. The Jiayuguan Fantawild Silk Road Divine Painting theme park covers about 1,000 mu and has 45 major indoor and outdoor themed attractions, as well as more than 200 leisure and landscape attractions. It is suitable for families with children and young people looking for adventure. Check the parks’ current operating information before visiting.
The Tola River Eco-Cultural Area is also rated a national Class 3A tourist attraction. Its facilities include a night-light tower built in Ming and Qing style, a large musical fountain and a water-screen film. Individual shows may vary; check in advance for current visiting options and performances.
