Fujian between Coast, Tea and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Fujian
Mount Wuyi in Fujian contains the largest and most representative largely intact forest combining the diversity of China’s subtropical forest and South China rainforest. From this natural setting to coastal routes, tea rituals and historic buildings, it offers a range of thematic ways to explore the region. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether landscapes, the coast or culture should take priority.
Coastal Routes and Pingtan
Officially described in September 2023, Fujian Coastal Scenic Route No. 1 consists mainly of the Fujian section of National Highway G228 and Pingtan’s ecological loop trail. From north to south, it passes through Ningde, Fuzhou, Pingtan, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou. Another point of reference is Pingtan’s approximately 48.3-kilometer coastal tourism road, which runs along the coast of the main island. It passes ecological coastal sections, landscapes shaped by marine erosion, island villages and historic attractions. The two descriptions cover different scales: one route passes through several named places, while the other follows the coast of Pingtan’s main island. When planning a specific drive, it is worth checking the latest route and service information, as the infrastructure and services along Route No. 1 may change.
Mountains, Forest and Tea
Fujian also offers varied landscapes beyond its coast. The Taimu Mountain National Scenic Area comprises five scenic areas: Taimu Mountain, Jiuli Creek Waterfall, Qingchuan Seaside, Sangyuan Emerald Lake and Fuyao Archipelago. It also includes the separate attractions of Liancheng Fortress and Ruiyun Temple. At Taimu Mountain, groups of peaks and granite formations resembling stone eggs shape the landscape. Taining is one of the six components of the serial World Heritage site China Danxia. Shangqingxi originates in Chuanli Village, in Taining’s Shangqing administrative area, and is more than 50 kilometers long.
In Wuyishan, nature experiences and tea traditions are different aspects of a visit. A bamboo raft trip on the Nine-Bend Stream takes about two hours and follows its nine bends and 18 curves. Every year around Jingzhe, the “Calling the Mountain” ritual is held to honor tea. Around Guyu, the mountains are opened and tea picking begins; many visitors from China and abroad take part. A roughly two-hour activity and annual traditions tied to specific seasons thus offer distinct interests for travelers.
Architecture and History
On Kulangsu, architecture and styles reflect the exchange of Chinese, Southeast Asian and European architectural and cultural values, as well as related traditions. The island is considered the origin and most outstanding expression of the Amoy Art Deco style. Kulangsu is accessible only by ferry; check the latest ferry services before your visit.
From the 10th to the 14th century, Quanzhou developed into a major maritime trade center in East and Southeast Asia. Its World Heritage site includes religious buildings and statues, ceramic and iron production sites, bridges, docks and pagodas. It also includes the Qingjing Mosque: built in the 11th century, it is one of China’s earliest Islamic buildings. These varied landmarks illustrate a different focus from Fujian’s natural and coastal areas: its history of trade and religion.
Fujian Tulou houses offer further insight into architectural forms and settlement history. Built for defensive purposes around a central open courtyard, they had only one entrance and no outward-facing windows below the first floor. At the same time, they served as residences for entire clans and as village units. In Fuzhou, the historic and cultural Sanfang Qixiang district in the city center has preserved almost the entire street and alley layout from the Tang and Song periods in a fishbone pattern.
Planning Your Trip
For a hotel stay in Fujian, you can first plan your trip around the themes that interest you most: coastal scenery and island towns, mountain nature and tea, or architecture and maritime history. Coastal Scenic Route No. 1 and the road along Pingtan’s main island cover different geographic scales; the ferry is the relevant way to reach Kulangsu. Check the latest route and ferry information when making these specific plans. This can help you choose a suitable location based on your travel interests.
