Chongqing: Karst Landscapes, Gorges and Culture
Accommodation in Chongqing
Karst plateaus, gorges along the Yangtze and museums focused on regional themes give a trip through Chongqing a range of different highlights. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first decide whether natural formations, the Three Gorges landscape, or culture and history will shape your trip.
Karst formations and protected areas
The Wulong Karst component in Chongqing consists of high-altitude inland karst plateaus. Its landscape includes enormous collapse sinkholes and natural bridges, which are representative of the tiankeng landscapes of southern China. Wulong therefore offers a concrete introduction to Chongqing’s karst landscapes: high plateaus and striking karst formations are both in focus here.
Jinfoshan Karst is located in Chongqing within the Jinfoshan National Nature Reserve and Jinfoshan National Park. It is a unique karst mesa surrounded by steep cliffs. The Xianvshan National Forest Park in Chongqing is also a national geopark and national forest park. These designations help distinguish Chongqing’s different karst and park themes without treating them as a single type of landscape.
The Three Gorges and Baidi Cheng
The Baidicheng–Qutang Gorge area is in Fengjie County, at the western entrance to the Three Gorges on the Yangtze. Qutang Gorge is 8 kilometers long and is the shortest, narrowest and most dangerous section of the Three Gorges. This concise geographical description makes it a clearly defined focus for anyone interested in the river landscape.
The history of the place name Baidi Cheng is also part of this area. The place was originally called Ziyang City. After Gongsun Shu proclaimed himself the White Emperor in 25 AD, it was renamed Baidi Cheng. The region thus combines a precise history of its name with its location at the western entrance to the Three Gorges.
Riverside areas, museums and urban culture
Hongyadong is in Yuzhong District, in the riverside area near the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, and is a tourism and recreation area. The old town of Ciqikou is in Shapingba District; it borders the Jialing to the south and is also at the foot of Gele Mountain. The descriptions of the two places emphasize different features: Hongyadong is defined by the confluence, while Ciqikou is characterized by its position in relation to the river and mountain.
The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, also called the Chongqing Museum, is a comprehensive museum of history and art history. Its main themes are Bayu culture, Three Gorges culture, wartime culture, migration culture and urban culture. The museum complex comprises five institutions: the main museum, the Chongqing White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum, the Chongqing Soong Ching Ling Memorial Hall, the Tushan Kiln Ruins Site and the Chongqing Three Gorges Cultural Relics Scientific Protection Base. The museum has 13 permanent exhibitions, offering its own introduction to several regional themes.
More cultural and scenic destinations
The Dazu Rock Carvings are in Dazu County, Chongqing, and are a World Heritage Site. The Black Valley Scenic Area, meanwhile, is in Heishan Township in the Wansheng Economic and Technological Development Zone. The two destinations offer different highlights: Dazu is a World Heritage Site, while Black Valley is a scenic area. Together with karst, gorges and museum themes, they offer a broad range of travel interests without promising the same experience at every location.
Choose a hotel location based on your destinations
When choosing a hotel base, it helps to first organize your planned destinations. The locations range from Wulong and Fengjie to Yuzhong and Shapingba districts, and on to Dazu and Heishan in the Wansheng area. This keeps your decision focused on your travel plans rather than on a single keyword such as karst, culture or the Three Gorges.
