The following places each offer a distinct focus for planning your trip.

Jingting Mountain: Peaks and Literary Tradition

Jingting Mountain is located in the northern suburbs of Xuancheng and encompasses 60 peaks. Its main peak is called Yifeng and is 317 meters high. These figures describe different scales: the number 60 refers to the mountain area, while 317 meters is the height of its main peak.

The mountain is known as the “Poetry Mountain of Jiangnan.” For centuries, it has been associated with numerous poems, prose works, and paintings. The nickname thus points to a literary and artistic tradition that adds a cultural perspective to the landscape. Anyone who wants to discover Xuancheng through its literary history will find a tangible starting point here.

A description published in 2022 highlights the view from Cloud Bridge in the Jingting Mountain Scenic Area, noting that only the views from some pavilions surpass it. Check the site’s condition before your visit.

Xuancheng Museum: Collections and Visit Planning

Xuancheng Museum is a general museum, a national second-tier museum, and a provincial patriotism education site. It was founded in 1988, and its new museum building opened in October 2017.

The exhibitions are presented under the theme “A Millennium-old Commandery, Cultural Xuancheng.” The collections on display include bronze objects from the Shang and Zhou periods, mirrors from the Han and Tang periods, celadon from the Six Dynasties, Xuanzhou Kiln ceramics, and objects from the Four Treasures of the Study. These examples bring together different historical periods and groups of objects, giving the collection more than one point of reference in terms of time and craft.

Visitor information published in 2023 lists Tuesday through Sunday as opening days, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; admission ends at 4:30 p.m. Check for possible exceptions before visiting on public holidays.

A service description also published in 2023 lists free guided tours with professional guides, self-guided audio tours, and AR and VR offerings. As individual offerings may change, check which ones will be available when you visit.

Chinese Alligator Lake: Habitat and Conservation

Chinese Alligator Lake was established in 1979 and is China’s largest conservation base for Chinese alligators. The area includes hilly terrain, tall trees, and shrub vegetation. Ponds, depressions, and reservoirs are connected by ditches and waterways. This combination of terrain, vegetation, and water provides a suitable habitat for Chinese alligators.

The focus here is on the ecological context: the description covers not only the protected species but also the water and vegetation landscape that forms its habitat. This sets it apart from the literary connections at Jingting Mountain and the historical collections in the museum.
