Nature and routes in the Waterberg

Marakele National Park lies in the Waterberg Mountains in Limpopo Province, near Thabazimbi. The Marakele 4×4 Eco Trail takes three days, includes two overnight stays and passes through the wilderness zone of the park’s primitive area; the park forms the core of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. Check operational details, such as seasonal departures, before booking.

The Waterberg Meander is another option for travellers who want to drive themselves: the circular route takes in historical, geological, cultural and ecological sites. Compared with the multi-day trail, the main difference is the way you explore—by car on a circular route or on an outdoor adventure with two overnight stays. The route and access conditions may change; check them in advance.

Cultural heritage with clear historical connections

The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape illustrates the rise and fall of the first indigenous kingdom in southern Africa, between 900 and 1300 AD. Mapungubwe Hill served as the royal residence and burial site for members of the kingdom’s elite. This links historical development with the specific function of a particular place.

The Makapans Valley World Heritage Site is one of the country’s most significant archaeological sites. Its caves continue to provide evidence of how early humans lived in Africa. Their historical significance differs: Mapungubwe represents a kingdom from a clearly defined period, while the caves in Makapans Valley offer insights into the lives of early humans.

Cycads and active nature experiences

Near Tzaneen, the Modjadji cycad (Encephalartos transvenosus) is one of the largest cycads in the world; the species is protected. The Modjadji Cycad Reserve has the world’s largest concentration of a single cycad species, also known as the “Modjadji palm”. Facilities at the reserve include a cycad nursery, picnic areas, day trails through the forest and an information centre. Check current conditions, facilities and access options before your visit.

Day visits and festival

Kruger National Park spans the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga; day visitors are welcome. Before visiting, check current entry conditions, booking requirements and gate operations, as these may change.

Phalaborwa is the permanent venue for the Limpopo Marula Festival. The 2026 edition was cancelled; check future dates before travelling. The 2025 edition featured culinary experiences and took place during the peak marula fruit harvest season.
