Dr Kenneth Kaunda: Culture, Nature and the N12 Treasure Route
Accommodation in Dr Kenneth Kaunda
Museum and art interests lead to different topics than a stay focused on geology, plant life or landscapes. The following destinations show how a stay in the district can be shaped around different themes.
Museums, art and history
The Klerksdorp Museum is located in the Old Klerksdorp Prison, a late Victorian sandstone building dating from 1891 in the City of Matlosana. The architecture and collection offer two different perspectives on a visit. The extensive permanent exhibition includes Khoisan rock art, originally from an initiation site for young girls.
The House Museum at the Klerksdorp Museum comprises five rooms representing different historical periods. Each room is furnished with authentic furniture and household items from the period it depicts. Visitors interested in historical everyday objects will find a different perspective here than in the rock art exhibition: the rooms combine depictions of different periods with furniture and objects from each period.
In Potchefstroom, the NWU Gallery has two gallery rooms and a large exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. Since opening, it has hosted more than 100 exhibitions featuring local and international artists. It also houses artworks from the NWU Art Collection that are not currently on loan. If current exhibitions are important to your plans, check the programme before visiting.
Botanical diversity and geology
The NWU Botanical Garden adjoins the Potchefstroom campus of the North-West University and covers almost three hectares. The garden consists mainly of indigenous plants; a few exotic plants are included for their botanical, medicinal or educational significance. This gives it a distinct botanical focus alongside the district’s museums and art spaces.
The garden’s Tree Route is about one kilometre long and allows visitors to see more than 100 trees in the garden. Group visits require advance notice. Before setting out, check current access and the condition of the path.
Another nature and learning attraction is the Vredefort Dome in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. It is the oldest, largest and most deeply eroded complex meteorite impact structure in the world. The Dome includes accessible geological exposures where various geological evidence of a complex meteorite impact structure can be seen. When planning your trip, this lets you distinguish between botanical themes and the geology of a significant impact structure.
Landscapes and nature destinations
Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve lies just outside Klerksdorp in the City of Matlosana and covers 1,200 hectares. Its landscape features low koppies, scattered acacia trees, large grassland areas and three seasonal dams. In contrast to the botanical garden, which covers almost three hectares, the reserve offers an expansive landscape with varied terrain features.
Boskop Dam Nature Reserve is a tourist attraction in the district and is located in JB Marks Local Municipality. The Vaal River is also a tourist attraction in JB Marks Local Municipality, within Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. The Orkney Likkewaan Hiking Trails are among the district’s natural heritage resources. If you plan to visit these trails, check access and current trail conditions in advance.
Routes, getting there and events
The N12 Treasure Route runs through Potchefstroom and the City of Matlosana, linking Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein and Hartbeesfontein. It also passes near the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site. As a guide for a road trip, the route connects several places mentioned in the district, though no specific journey time can be inferred from this alone.
The main railway line from Gauteng to the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces runs through Potchefstroom in JB Marks Local Municipality, within Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality; however, the route alone does not mean that passenger services operate on it. If you are considering travelling by train, check current passenger services and the timetable for your specific connection. The Matlosana Cultural Festival is part of the City of Matlosana’s annual events calendar. Dates and programmes may change; check the event details if the festival is part of your travel plans.
