In the Bushveld, landscapes, nature watching and cultural heritage are distinct themes. The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve lies within the Waterberg District in Limpopo Province. Low mountain ranges and steep slopes characterize the area; its vegetation is typical of mountainous savannas. Marakele National Park lies in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains and adds its own connection to the mountains to this landscape.

Mountain landscapes and Nylsvley

The Nylsvley area also combines a specific landscape size with a larger river landscape: the internationally known Ramsar site covers 4,000 hectares and is part of the 16,000-hectare Nyl River floodplain. The floodplain stretches for more than 70 kilometers from Modimolle to Mokopane. These figures help put Nylsvley in context not only as a single place for wildlife watching, but also as part of the wider floodplain.

Nylsvley Nature Reserve is open to tourists and is usually visited for birdwatching. Day visitors can also hike or cycle there. In this nature reserve, wildlife watching and outdoor activities are different options. If birdwatching is your main interest, it is the usual reason to visit; hiking and cycling are other activities specifically mentioned for day visitors.

Cultural history in the Bushveld

Makapan Valley is protected as a National Heritage Site under the National Heritage Resources Act of 1999. Its archaeological caves contain Paranthropus fossils dated to a period between 4.5 and 2.5 million years ago. This connects the protected site with a very early period in human history. Another named place is significant to local culture: the prominent Modimolle Mountain is a hill in the town of Modimolle and is called the “Place of Spirits.”

Lehlabile Cultural Tours offer insights into local ways of life. Topics include food and decoration, as well as singing, dancing and oral traditions. Those interested in cultural expression will find several different ways to engage here: everyday life, design, music and storytelling traditions. These topics complement the archaeological perspective of Makapan Valley, although the two places do not tell the same story.

Choose activities and routes

At Mokolo Dam, visitors can go boating, fishing and canoeing. Boating and fishing are offered at Doorndraai Dam. The specific difference between the two offerings is that canoeing is also listed for Mokolo Dam, but not for Doorndraai Dam. This makes it possible to choose based on the activities explicitly listed.

The Waterberg Meander is an informative self-drive route through the scenic wilderness of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and its surroundings. Its themes include historical, geological, cultural and ecological attractions. The Limpopo Golf & Safari Route, meanwhile, combines golf courses with safari experiences. The two routes therefore have different emphases: the Meander brings together several themes related to knowledge and landscape, while the Golf & Safari Route combines golf and safari.
