Accommodation in Chitengo
Wilson Biodiversity Lab, guided safaris in open vehicles, and a playground for young children. This helps you weigh whether research, a safari, or a place to play for younger children should be the focus of your stay.
Research at the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab
The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab is located in Chitengo and serves as a central facility for Gorongosa’s various science programs. It is a modern scientific facility in the heart of the national park and one of the first of its kind in Africa. The Lab offers long-term research and training opportunities in biodiversity documentation, ecology, and conservation biology for people from Mozambique, visiting researchers, and students.
A tour of the Lab introduces Gorongosa’s conservation approach. To book, contact the Activities Office after you arrive in Chitengo; tours are subject to availability. If this perspective matters to your trip, check availability there while planning your visit.
Safaris and a playground for young children
Guided safaris in open vehicles depart from either Chitengo Camp or Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari. If you plan to go on a safari, confirm the current operating details when booking. The two departure points mentioned give you a specific starting point for including this experience in your plans.
Chitengo has a playground for young children with a slide, swings, and play equipment shaped like African animals. This can be a useful consideration when planning with younger children. Check the facility’s current availability before making it a firm part of your plans.
A ceremonial site in Chitengo
A sacred Phacassa tree, also called a rain tree, near the park headquarters served as a ceremonial site for a celebration that began in Chitengo on April 2. The tree and its ceremonial significance provide a different point of reference from the research and safari offerings: here, a specific place is connected to a particular historical occasion.
Sofala in a wider context
The wider destination of Sofala offers hikes in the Gorongosa Mountains. In Marromeu National Reserve, visitors can hike across plains inhabited by buffalo or go on safaris there. The reserve’s climate is considered mild between May and June; this period is considered suitable for safaris. This sets mountain hikes alongside activities on the buffalo plains as distinct nature experiences.
Beira, the coastal capital of Sofala Province, lies about 1,190 km north of Maputo on the central coast of the Indian Ocean. In Beira, the Rio Chiveve serves as a meeting place for the community and visitors. Recreational facilities along the river include an amphitheater and green spaces.
Beira’s cultural sites also offer different points of interest: Catedral da Beira on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane is a historic and architectural landmark of Mozambique. Casa dos Bicos on Avenida Samora Machel in Beira is of great historical and architectural significance. Casa do Artista da Cidade da Beira is a cultural meeting place that promotes art and culture; check the current program before visiting. The Utse dance originates with the Sena and is practiced in the districts crossed by the Zambezi in northern and central Sofala.
