Taroudant is surrounded by the mountains of the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas. The city is considered a starting point for numerous hikes in the Atlas Mountains. At the same time, the medina, regional traditions and landscapes offer different ways to plan a trip. If you are considering Taroudant as a destination for a hotel stay, first think about whether you would mainly like to experience culture and market life, or nature and outdoor activities.

Mountains, Hiking Trails and Oasis

Toubkal National Park extends across the central High Atlas and overlaps with Taroudant Province. It is home to North Africa’s largest population of Barbary sheep, as well as notable bird species, including bearded vultures and golden eagles. In the Tifnoute Valley, hiking and mountain biking routes follow the river; waterfalls and green mountain landscapes shape the surroundings. Route conditions change seasonally, so plan your outing with the season in mind.

The Tioute Oasis offers a different kind of landscape: in a dry setting, grain fields, fruit trees and wild palms form a lush green patchwork. Visitors can walk along irrigation channels, arrange donkey or mule rides, and picnic beneath an argan tree. Local arrangements may vary, so it is advisable to inquire in advance about rides.

The 16th-century kasbah is a defining feature of the oasis. Once the palace of a caid, it overlooks the palm grove and villages farther afield. In the Tifnoute Valley, river routes and outdoor activities take center stage; in Tioute, paths along the irrigation channels combine with rides that can be arranged and time spent beneath the argan trees. This makes it possible to distinguish between nature experiences based on the specific activities available.

Medina, Architecture and Traditions

East of the medina stands the Great Mosque of Taroudant, Al Masjid Al Aâdam. Together with its madrasa, it covers more than 3,200 square meters. Al Masjid Al Aâdam remains a center for the religious training of imams and Toulbas. Bab El Kasbah, the medina’s oldest gate, offers panoramic views of the kasbah and nearby gardens.

The traditional souk offers a glimpse of Moroccan market life among colorful stalls and lively lanes. The traditional tannery is also still in operation, giving visitors an insight into time-honored leather-making methods. Check opening arrangements before visiting.

Taskiwin is Taroudant’s warrior dance; it takes its name from the dancers’ decorative horns. Another local experience is a visit to argan oil producers outside the city walls. Cooperatives and private producers shell the nuts, press them and offer the finished oil for tasting. Since individual cooperatives’ offerings may change, it is best to check in advance if you have a specific visit in mind.

Horse-drawn carriages take visitors to the city walls, which are associated with preserving the medina’s history and traditions. A ride usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour; the designated carriage stand is Alaouyine Square. If you are planning a ride, check current availability.

Choosing the Focus of Your Stay

For a choice between different travel themes, Taroudant offers both the sights of the medina and nature and hiking experiences in the Atlas region and province. If you would like to focus on markets, architecture and traditional practices, plan around the city’s attractions. If you are interested in hiking or mountain biking, take into account the seasonally changing conditions in the Tifnoute Valley. This can help you choose your destination based on the activities you want to shape your hotel stay.
