Chtouka Ait Baha Province: Iguidar, Medersa and Moussem
Accommodation in Chtouka Ait Baha Province
Chtouka Ait Baha Province offers several different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: restored granaries, the religious educational institution in Tanalt, a weekly souk, and Souss Massa National Park. When looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether historic granaries, the Moussem, local crafts, or a visit to the national park will shape your trip. These places represent different interests within the province and give you specific themes to consider when planning.
Iguidar and fortified granaries
Agadir Ighir Ifrane is a significant Iguidar and a tourist attraction in the commune of IdaOugnidif. The Iguidar and its surroundings have been extensively restored. This means the restoration encompasses not only the granary itself, but also its surroundings.
Agadir Inoumar is a fortified Amazigh granary in the western Anti-Atlas, built more than three centuries ago. It is divided into five blocks and contains a total of 295 niches. Its age places the granary in historical context, while the blocks and niches describe its specific layout.
Agadir Imchguiguiln is also a fortified granary and is about 750 years old. During its most recent renovation, around thirty storage chambers, the central square, a mosque, and outbuildings were restored. The age and renovation offer different insights: one relates to the granary’s history, while the other concerns the parts that have been renovated. Opening depends on the guardian, so check the visiting arrangements in advance.
Tanalt, the Medersa, and the Moussem
Tanalt and the Medersa Sidi El Haj L’hbib are in the southern part of the province; the Medersa is in the town center. It is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious religious schools in Souss-Massa. Students come from the region and from across Morocco. Tanalt thus brings together a local point of interest and an educational institution that draws visitors from across the region and country.
Another connection to the Medersa is the annual Moussem in Tanalt. It is held in honor of the school’s founder and welcomes worshippers and traders. For planning purposes, this recurring event differs from the Medersa’s permanent presence in the town: if you want to plan your trip around the Moussem, check the dates in advance.
Souk and national park
The weekly souk in Ida Ougnidif offers local almonds, argan nuts, and locally made handicrafts. Here, the focus is on produce and crafts, while the granaries and the Medersa present other cultural themes. Check market dates and product availability locally before making the souk a fixed part of your plans.
Souss Massa National Park is also in Chtouka Ait Baha Province. Visits require an accredited eco-guide and a reservation with the park administration or authorized private operators. Check the arrangements again before your trip. The guide and reservation requirements are an explicit part of planning a visit to this destination.
Kasbah Tizourgane
Kasbah Tizourgane has been renovated as a guesthouse. Visitors can walk through its narrow alleyways and along the ramparts. If you are considering staying overnight at the kasbah, check availability before booking. This allows you to consider the historic complex both as a visitor attraction and, subject to current availability, as an overnight stay.
