Discover Doha: The Corniche, museums and Souq Waqif
Accommodation in Doha
Doha can be explored through a range of interests: walks along the bay, paths through a multi-level hilly landscape, museums and traditional street life at the market. Each destination offers a different focus and can help you decide which themes to explore on your trip. When choosing a hotel, it may also help to first consider which aspects of the city interest you most.
Getting around and finding your way in Doha
The three lines of the Doha Metro—the Red, Green and Gold—meet at Msheireb station. This makes Msheireb an important reference point on the network. If you are planning to travel by metro, check the latest service information in advance.
The Doha Corniche is a seven-kilometre waterfront promenade. Its crescent-shaped route runs around Doha Bay. The Corniche is within walking distance of the Museum of Islamic Art. This means you can treat a museum visit and a stroll along the waterfront as different parts of your Doha trip, without assuming a specific walking time.
Katara Hills also offer walking paths: north and south of Katara Cultural Village, the paths run across several levels. This sets them apart from the Corniche’s long waterfront promenade. If you enjoy walks, Doha offers both routes along the bay and an area with paths at different elevations.
Museums and cultural perspectives
The Msheireb Museums consist of four restored historic houses. They explore important figures as well as periods in Qatar’s history and development. Tours are offered to individuals, groups and institutions; check with the museum for current tour arrangements. A visit combines the historic architecture of the four houses with the themes explored in each one.
Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art was founded in 2010 and offers an Arab perspective on contemporary art. The National Museum of Qatar takes a different approach with its immersive galleries, bringing together the country’s cultural heritage and innovation. This distinction can help with planning if you are choosing between contemporary art and an interpretation of heritage and innovation.
Souq Waqif and traditional street life
The winding lanes of Souq Waqif offer a glimpse of traditional street life. At the Falcon Souq, part of the historic Souq Waqif market, visitors can see falcons up close. Under a shopkeeper’s supervision, they can also hold a falcon on their arm. This activity is described but is not guaranteed at all times; if it is important to your visit, ask about its current availability.
The destinations appeal to different interests: the Corniche and Katara Hills offer different kinds of walks, while the museums each explore art, history and cultural heritage in their own way. Souq Waqif adds the lanes of a traditional market and the Falcon Souq to this selection. These highlights can help you decide which experiences you want to shape your stay in Doha.
