A trip to Qatar can bring together a wide range of interests: archaeological sites, Islamic art, contemporary creativity, a planetarium and guided nature experiences. When looking for a hotel, you might first consider the focus of your trip. Al Zubarah, places in Doha and natural destinations such as Al Thakhira or Khor Al Adaid each offer a different thematic focus.

Al Zubarah: an archaeological site stretching to the coast

The Al Zubarah site lies about 100 km northwest of Doha and extends 2.5 km from Al Zubarah Fort to the coast. It covers 60 hectares. Its remains include houses, mosques, date presses, large fortified buildings and a market. The range therefore includes residential and religious buildings, facilities for processing dates, fortifications and market structures. Al Zubarah is not limited to a single building, but encompasses a variety of architectural traces.

Doha and Katara: art, architecture and a planetarium

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha houses one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Islamic art. Masterpieces from around the world represent the diversity of Islamic heritage. Katara offers a different perspective: its amphitheatre combines classical Greek style with Islamic influences. It covers an area of 3,275 m² and can accommodate up to 5,000 spectators.

The Qatar Museum Gallery in Katara showcases works by local and international artists on themes that put people at the centre. The Katara Art Center (KAC) is an independently operated platform for contemporary art and interdisciplinary creative work. Katara therefore offers both thematically focused artworks and a platform for contemporary and interdisciplinary work.

The Al Thuraya Planetarium adds a science focus to these cultural venues. Its digital full-dome system can take up to 200 visitors on a journey through the universe. The exhibits cover astronomy, the atmosphere, geology and the oceans; they also explore the role of astronomy in Qatar’s history and religious traditions. Katara’s public beach offers a different experience, inviting visitors to stroll and linger.

Guided nature experiences

Al Thakhira was declared a nature reserve in 2006 because of its rich marine biodiversity. Guided tours along the mangrove waterways offer the chance to observe birds such as herons and flamingos, as well as marine animals such as crabs and fish. Tour offerings may vary, so check in advance whether a guided tour is available on your preferred date.

Guided nature walks are offered at Khor Al Adaid in southeastern Qatar. Visitors may be able to spot wildlife such as the Arabian oryx. The experiences differ: in Al Thakhira, tours follow waterways and offer opportunities for wildlife watching; at Khor Al Adaid, the focus is on a guided nature walk and looking out for the oryx.
