Danfa’s connection with Mount Moriah has several historical religious dimensions. These include rituals at a sacred grove, prayer activities at the Mount Moriah Prayer Centre, and gatherings related to missionary work. For travelers interested in cultural history, it is worth distinguishing these uses by place and occasion: they refer to different parts of the site’s history, not to a single type of event.

The grove and the history of its name

A 2017 study describes hilly, rocky terrain in Danfa that was considered a sacred grove of the local deity Ogbo Kofi. Community rituals took place there. Missionaries later named the site Mount Moriah. The local religious association and the later name are two distinct historical references: Ogbo Kofi represents the grove’s sacred connection, while Mount Moriah reflects the later name given by missionaries. This distinction helps place the site in context not only through its later name, but also by taking into account the community’s previously described ritual practices.

Missionary work and inauguration

The site in Danfa served as a meeting place for Basel missionaries during their visits from Abokobi, where they carried out activities for their outstations. This connection is part of the site’s missionary history and describes a specific function of the grounds during their visits. An inauguration in 2012 is also recorded for the Mount Moriah Prayer Centre: on that occasion, the chairman of the Presbytery, Rev. Dr. Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor, formalized the centre’s activities. The meeting place and the inauguration therefore point to different aspects: the use of the grounds for missionary activities and a dated step in the history of the Prayer Centre’s activities.

Prayer services and retreats

A prayer service called mpaebͻ kԑse, meaning “great prayer service,” was held at the Mount Moriah Prayer Centre on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Holiday prayer retreats were also held on the Mount Moriah grounds, in the wooded areas outside the chapel. The details differ by time and place: the service is associated with a day of the week and a time window, while the retreats are associated with holidays and an area outside the chapel. The Wednesday schedule is part of a historical account and is not a confirmed current timetable. If you are considering a visit, confirm dates and access arrangements in advance.

Putting Mount Moriah in context for your trip

If you are considering Danfa because of its religious history, Mount Moriah offers several distinct points of interest: the grove’s local association, its later name, missionary activities, and prayer events. These connections can be considered according to their respective uses, rather than combined into a single story. For planning your trip, the distinction between historical background and a specific current event is especially important. Therefore, do not plan a visit based solely on the recorded Wednesday hours or historical retreats; confirm current visiting options in advance.
